Tara Brady Irish Times Bellucci has seldom been better as she flexes every known acting muscle. Rated: 4/5 Feb 23, 2016 Full Review Boyd van Hoeij Hollywood Reporter Though occasionally somewhat blunt and derivative, this drama is more often an insightful and admirably complex take on human behavior. It can only further cement Edoin's reputation as one of Quebec's brightest new directorial talents. Oct 2, 2015 Full Review Radheyan Simonpillai NOW Toronto A fine cast that includes Monica Bellucci and Pascale Bussires make the most of their joyless characters, who are minimally defined by whatever tragedy has them moping around Montreal. Rated: 2/5 Oct 2, 2015 Full Review Mary Angela Rowe Seventh Row Guy doin's Ville-Marie is a visually striking film with a curiously dispassionate core. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 14, 2017 Full Review Jared Mobarak The Film Stage I loved the elaborate construction keeping us on our toes from one weighty step to the next. Audience Member Was solid enough in places but lacks the flavor or elements that would keep the momentum going. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member There is something at the core of Ville-Marie about how society frames motherhood as both the greatest joy a woman can experience while simultaneously using it to trap women within the status quo. It's too bad that director Guy Edion can decide if he's trying to make a serious drama or overwrought melodrama. There are some solid moments, but Monica Bellucci is given some truly awful scenes that debase and shame her to no end, not even a twisted misogynistic one. Unfortunately her character has too much screen time and is too central to whatever it is Edion is trying to get at that the strength of the rest of the storylines and the conclusion of hers cannot make up for the deficit.
