In an ordinary suburban house, on a lovely tree-lined street, in the middle of 1970s America, lived the five beautiful, dreamy Lisbon sisters, whose doomed fates indelibly marked the neighborhood boys who to this day continue to obsess over them. A story of love and repression, fantasy and terror, sex and death, memory and longing. It is at its core a mystery story: a heart-rending investigation into the impenetrable, life-altering secrets of American adolescence.

Critics Consensus

The Virgin Suicides drifts with a dreamlike melancholy that may strike some audiences as tedious, but Sofia Coppola's feature debut is a mature meditation on disaffected youth.

Sophie Mackintosh New Statesman The film’s visual style is not in thrall to aestheticised despair, but best understood as an appreciation of the Lisbon girls themselves, a celebration of their lives, fairly unremarkable until they are not. Jul 26, 2023 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) And yet a film set in suburban Michigan in 1975, about a quintet of teenage pre-Raphaelite enigmas who take their own lives, somehow remains dreamy and beguiling. Nazya Derin K Sofia Coppola has done an excellent job cinematographically. There is almost no difference between the book and the movie, there is no originality, but this does not change the movie in a bad way in any way, on the contrary, it helps us understand the Lisbon sisters better. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review julie b Hazy, summery, yet something hypnotic and haunting. Impressive to be able to create suspense and mystery around a story where you know the ending right from the start, the soundtrack is perfect, and the way the story is told and why is very interesting to reflect on. I appreciated the length but at the same time it left me wanting more; I can see this being something I rewatch multiple times. “You’re not even old enough to know how bad life gets” Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Mason M The Virgin Suicides is an interesting film that I'm not sure how I feel about. Certain films can kind of have this kind of unique, dream-like atmosphere, such as La La Land or Persona that make them hard to know how I feel about it. The Virgin Suicides doesn't give us many answers, and relies mostly on that atmosphere, but is done very well. It's been half a year since I saw this, and I still can't figure out the meaning of the ending. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review Ronald S Directed by the critically acclaimed, Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter Sofia: A melancholy look at a household full of over-disciplined, under-appreciated beautiful young female teens in 1971, struggling with a tragic and horrific death in the family and trying to live a somewhat normal social life. If you can relate to making out with girls in high school? You can relate to THIS! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️out of five. Great 😌 film! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review Tom F A strong film, better than Sofia Coppola’s second film, though the latter got more attention.
