In an ordinary suburban house, on a lovely tree-lined street, in the middle of 1970s America, lived the five beautiful, dreamy Lisbon sisters, whose doomed fates indelibly marked the neighborhood boys who to this day continue to obsess over them. A story of love and repression, fantasy and terror, sex and death, memory and longing. It is at its core a mystery story: a heart-rending investigation into the impenetrable, life-altering secrets of American adolescence.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Virgin Suicides drifts with a dreamlike melancholy that may strike some audiences as tedious, but Sofia Coppola's feature debut is a mature meditation on disaffected youth.

The film’s visual style is not in thrall to aestheticised despair, but best understood as an appreciation of the Lisbon girls themselves, a celebration of their lives, fairly unremarkable until they are not. Go to Full Review

And yet a film set in suburban Michigan in 1975, about a quintet of teenage pre-Raphaelite enigmas who take their own lives, somehow remains dreamy and beguiling. Go to Full Review

addy p Nov 14 My absolute favorite movie. I feel like it shows how men view women as a whole very well, the movie is told from the boys POV, which is supposed to be sort of frustrating to the viewers, but this was what I believe, an amazing choice, their teenage girls, the boys are teenage boys, so the boys aren't going to tell the story like they understand, or feel bad, they just stereotype and dehumanize them. amazing director choice again from Sofia Coppola. See more Sofia P Oct 17 I read the book for a Book Club, and I was a little dazzled. I was unsure if I understood the book at all, as well as if I liked it or not. A lot of pieces were missing. Sofia Coppola managed to direct a movie which, in my opinion, is better than the book, for the first time ever. She clarified some parts, and cancelled some other that were really absurd. See more Gareth v Aug 7 Sofia Coppola’s debut feature is a dreamy, melancholy portrait of adolescence, repression, and the inabilty to fully understand others. It has it's flat spots, but overall this is a solid movie. See more Faiz D May 13 Virgin Suicides is one of those films that make you feel unsatisfied and empty. It has an unbelievably mysterious and fascinating ending. Overall, a depressing, beautiful, incredibly subtle and deft cinematic exploration! See more Rami A @Bunt101 May 11 Sofia Coppola tells a story like this through a psychological standpoint, allowing the audience to connect with these characters, regardless of gender. In the end, it can leave you speechless, upset, or depressed, as this is a movie with heavy themes. See more Read all reviews
