Several years into the future, alien invaders threaten the safety of Earth. Mikako joins the global forces to defend the planet, but leaves behind her middle school crush, Noboru. They stay connected through emails even while their lives diverge. The galactic war soon sends Mikako further out into space where the time it takes to send and receive messages grows longer. As years start to pass between emails, Mikako and Noboru each grapple with unspoken feelings while hoping for the next message. Voices of a Distant Star is an emotionally-gripping sci-fi tale from Makoto Shinkai that offers an early look into his directorial vision before global blockbusters Weathering With You and Your Name.

Chill B A story from Shinkai dealing with a barrier between a blossoming romantic relationship: space. It had a nice soundtrack and executed in interesting idea pretty well for such an early production from Shinkai. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/18/24 Full Review Holly S Eu já assisti, mas não lembro, mas confio no makoto-sensei Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review S P The short viewing time and the fact that it was realized by one person makes it worth the watch. The themes are interesting, but there was too little engagement of the two protagonists to be able to be fully engaged in their story. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/04/24 Full Review Audience Member A beautiful and heartbreaking short film from a first time director/writer who went on to do amazing things. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Late R This is the film with which Makoto Shinkai burst onto the film scene and it deserves all of the praise it has received. With a 25 minute run-time, it isn't going to be the longest OVA you've seen, but you'd be hard pushed to find many that manage to pack as much emotion and sci-fi action into such a short period of time. This isn't Shinkai's best work as there are many things that it lacks leading it to feel somewhat unpolished, but it certainly demonstrated what he is capable of and put him squarely on the map as the man whom many have been calling the next Hayao Miyazaki. And that is a very bold claim, indeed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/17/17 Full Review Audience Member WOW... in 25 mins this film does more than most movies do in an hour and a half.
