Phil Hoad Guardian An oblique cousin of the vitriolic satire of Sergei Loznitsa's 2018 film Donbass. Rated: 4/5 Nov 9, 2021 Full Review Alissa Simon Variety An impressively shot drama marbled with welcome notes of absurdist comedy and wry humor... Apr 5, 2019 Full Review Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Unfortunately Bondarchuk doesn't have as much to contemplate as he lets on; the movie often disintegrates into superficial art-film moodiness. Oct 10, 2018 Full Review Filipe Freitas Always Good Movies While the absurd humor generates crushing awkwardness, the convincing environments promulgate a sad authenticity. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 8, 2021 Full Review Jaime Fa de Lucas Culturamas The metaphors it uses to develop its theme are Volcano's highlights, supported by Vadim Ilkov's wonderful photography. [Full review in Spanish] Jan 9, 2019 Full Review Amber Wilkinson Eye for Film Bondarchuk subverts the idea of Kafka - rather than this proving to be hell, there's an increasing sense that a loss of structure could be less a tearing down of Lukas' life than an opportunity to build something different. alec b A truly touching, independent film showing the realties of those living in the Russian-occupied territory of Ukraine. Stepansky shines in his breakout role as a new actor, and even those of us not personally connected to Ukraine can appreciate the message of the film. Artistic, wrenching at times and witty.
