Ronnie Scheib Variety Exquisite, self-contained curio. Jul 29, 2005 Full Review Ty Burr Boston Globe Shakhnazarov's film effortlessly captures the times and the author's conflicted yet unyielding attitude, yet it never draws any conclusions -- the film remains under glass. It's watchable, nevertheless. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 29, 2005 Full Review Kevin Crust Los Angeles Times The force of the film is not as profound as Shakhnazarov clearly intended, and The Rider Named Death is easier to respect than enjoy. Rated: 3/5 Jun 9, 2005 Full Review Eve Tushnet Patheos Mostly a straightforward story of revolutionary failure–and the slowly-growing acknowledgment that violence inevitably spreads, crossing every moral boundary you think you’ve set, and toppling, as it spreads, some kind of necessary structure in the soul. May 23, 2022 Full Review Eric Monder Film Journal International Could have been livelier and more suspenseful given the subject matter, but it remains effectively made throughout. Mar 1, 2007 Full Review Michael W. Phillips, Jr. Goatdog's Movies It's worth a look; maybe there's more to Georges's blank slate than can be gleaned on one viewing, and the beginning and end of the film are worth the price of admission. Audience Member An anarchist operating a terror cell in Czarist Russia loses each operative one by one until he faces his obsessive personal vendetta with a nobleman alone. A brittle, tightly constructed film about alienation, aggression and rage. A movie so hard to find that I was beginning to think I just imagined seeing it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Showy period drama featuring bomb throwers and revolution. You can be taken away by the Nihlist undertow. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member A thrilling story of terrorism in early 1900s Russia. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Really cool, it shows how one loses their mind when plotting to kill someone for poltical reasons, and loses the reason as time goes on. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review walter m "The Rider Named Death" is a Russian movie which is based on a real life revolutionary terrorist. The movie opens in 1906 with a series of killings of government officials. The main character, Georges, is the mysterious leader of a cell that is committed to revolutionary violence. Their main target is a grand duke. While all of this is going on, Georges is romancing two women: a member of the cell who is the bomb maker and an upper class lady. "The Rider Named Death" is a well made movie. I like that it takes a chance by having its main characters the villains of the piece. It also makes two excellent points: 1. There is no difference between a terrorist and your common murderer. The violence is not sensationalized. Georges does not seem to have a belief in much of anything. 2. Terrorism is not a recent phenomenon.(A political assassination like those shown here in this movie started World War I.) It has been going on for a very long time. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
