G. Allen Johnson San Francisco Chronicle The period atmosphere is inviting, and the film achieves a meditative quality that precious few modern films have. Audience Member Koji Yakusho plays brilliantly the role of a successful big town middle-aged author who seems to have neglected his aged countryside parents. This movie plays like a rustic Hayao Miyazaki anime, in a good way, capturing the beauty of the country home, and quirkiness of each member of the family. The entire cast play their roles quite brilliantly, aside from the off-kilter Aoi Miyazaki as the youngest daughter. Nonetheless, this is a moving tale of choices, responsibilities, buried memories, and ultimately, familiar understanding. 2 movies made me shed tears this year, the french Intouchables in sheer laughter, and this one in heavy nostalgia. The nicely-done costumes and props transport the viewer unobtrusively back in time. But for me, 'twas the poetry that was timeless, and the father-daughter / mother-son hugs by the shore that are a defining moment of what, despite past undercurrents, family should be: accepting and cherished. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Kudos to Kirin Kiki (the granny) and Koji Yakusho (leading man) for putting up a brilliant performance in this movie. I loved the development of the story, and how our memories can fade-in/out as age catches up with us. This is a touching film that made me revisit my own emotional world with family. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Brilliant acting by all three main actors Yakusho Koji, Kiki Kirin and Miyazaki Aoi. This family drama might sound very typical, but it's definitely natural and moving if not more. You care for the characters and even see yourself from them easily.
