Audience Member Simply one man expressing a pure zeal for capturing and contemplating images from his surroundings and letting them unwind haphazardly over six reels. It made me want to become a filmmaker. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Time goes by and cameras keep running all over the world, burning any bit of space in proximity onto film or memory cards for posterity. I believe that Jonas Mekas' diary films are among the purest forms of filmmaking to be discovered. This film in particular is a brilliant exercise in Mekas' own style. Walden resembles the spontaneous poetry of Beat-generation writers, forgoing narrative threads and moralistic messages in favor of a flow of images and a discordant soundtrack confiding a wealth of observation to the viewers - thoughts, places seen and people met, especially friends, their families, and fellow artists, are the film's momentum, all captured on old saturated 16mm color film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Assembled from 4 years of footage Mekas shot, the film documents episodes from Meka's life including attending weddings, filmmaking excursions , meeting with other filmmakers such as Brakhage, Dreyer, Warhol, etc. In the poetic tradition Mekas discovers his own artistic voice through this process of recording and retrospection of his quotidian life. The handheld footage is very jittery with tons of rapid cutting as well as double exposures which looks amazing in the part called Notes on a Circus, originally intended as a tribute to Kenneth Anger.
