Critics Consensus

Wander benefits from Aaron Eckhart's strong leading performance, but his efforts aren't enough to support the story's increasingly cuckoo twists and turns.

Glenn Kenny RogerEbert.com [Wander] is kind of a drag at times, despite the energy director Mullen puts into the scenario's depiction. Rated: 2/4 Dec 4, 2020 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times Admirably ambitious albeit ultimately bonkers... Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 2, 2020 Full Review Jordan Mintzer Hollywood Reporter Perhaps the biggest problem with Wander is that, as much as it tools with the viewer until the very last shot, tossing out tons of red herrings and false leads, it never really trusts in the viewer's intelligence. Sep 18, 2020 Full Review Jessica Scott Nightmarish Conjurings With no emotional stakes and a confusing central conspiracy, Wander is a thriller without thrills and a political statement that doesn’t know what it wants to say. Dec 27, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy One of the lamest episodes of The X-Files never made, Wander actually brings to mind the name of Mad magazine's spoof of the cult series. Just call this The Ecch-Files. Rated: 1.5/4 Apr 28, 2021 Full Review John Serba Decider Wander tries to be a taut thriller, but after a while, it just wears you down. William R Things just didn't add up, we need it Scully and Mulder to came and save the film Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Terence K It reminded of a "beautiful mind" it is wasn't for the acting this movie would be worse. lol. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/23 Full Review Merissa'yah I thought the movie was great! Sad, eye opening and packed with action! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/05/23 Full Review Melanie M really captivating and thrilling. great performances and pace ! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/30/23 Full Review Dave H An interesting study in how bad a movie can turn. It starts strong but reveals its main themes and characters way too late in the game and rushes to catch up with itself ultimately taking the suspense of "crazy or not?" way too far. The exposition is heavy handed, the raison d'etre of the town of Wander is barely touched and could have been so much more fleshed out. It ends up just a mish mash of loose ends and half thoughts. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/29/23 Full Review Alain M "Wander" is a film that boasts a talented cast, including Aaron Eckhart, Tommy Lee Jones, and Heather Graham, but unfortunately fails to deliver a compelling story or engaging characters. The film follows Eckhart's character, Arthur Bretnik, a private investigator who becomes obsessed with a conspiracy theory involving a cult and a series of mysterious deaths. Despite the potential for an intriguing thriller, "Wander" ultimately falls flat. The pacing is slow, and the story lacks any real tension or suspense. The characters are also underdeveloped, with little explanation or motivation for their actions. Eckhart delivers a solid performance as Arthur, but his character is ultimately undermined by a convoluted and poorly executed plot. Tommy Lee Jones, while always a welcome presence on screen, is given little to do in his role as a government agent investigating Arthur's claims. The film's attempts at social commentary are heavy-handed and often feel out of place, adding to the overall disjointed feel of the story. The ending is unsatisfying, leaving too many loose ends and unanswered questions. In conclusion, "Wander" is a missed opportunity, failing to deliver on its promising premise and talented cast. Despite some strong performances, the film ultimately falls short in its execution and leaves the audience feeling underwhelmed. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
