Iris Z The film grounds itself in Fumiko’s own narration, weaving her poetry and prose into a connective thread that unites the fractured pieces of her life. Through her voice, we witness the daily struggle of scraping together a living, the desire for stability, and her unrelenting pursuit of a writer’s life. That same rhythm of hardship and longing reverberates through her relationships, which in turn become raw material for the works she ultimately brings into print. Unlike many of Naruse Mikio’s films—where silence, ellipses in editing, and restrained storytelling give the structure its shape—A Wanderer’s Notebook adopts a distinctly first-person perspective. This choice draws the viewer closer to Fumiko’s inner world, while the film’s aspect ratio reinforces this intimacy. The narration of her poetry punctuates each chapter of her life, carrying the story forward with a natural rhythm—like breath, rising and falling with its own cadence. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/25 Full Review william d Basically a chick flick: a woman leads a tough life and all the men are despicable (with one prominent exception). However, Hideko Takamine's character of Fumiko is so sympathetic you can't help but pull for her. Takamine is truly a remarkable actress. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Hideko Takamine had the sensitivities and toughness to bring an inspiring character alive, she was really natural, her emotional range was superb. Very enjoyable film. While I loved each of them, this film was of the most remarkable. The emotional current had a much greater range than in many of his other films.
