Critics Consensus

Providing Alan Ritchson an ideal vehicle to flex his brawny charisma, War Machine occasionally clanks when it comes to character depth but otherwise soldiers on to deliver an awesome dose of action spectacle.

It's a science-fiction survival film – the Ranger candidates are carrying blanks – with trace elements of Transformers, Battleship, and Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Somewhat derivative, but modestly enjoyable. Go to Full Review
Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Mar 9
The film’s R rating is well-deserved thanks to the profusion of burnt and dismembered bodies on view in the alien machine’s wake. Unfortunately, the screenplay by Hughes and co-writer James Beaufort leaves much to be desired. Go to Full Review

It makes for a slicker-than-usual streaming premiere, an easy, drink-your-way-through-it Friday night option for those who wish to remain entirely unchallenged. Go to Full Review
Connor Petrey Pop Culture Leftovers May 17
War Machine is spoiled by a severe lack of tension and while literally everyone is on the table for the slaughter, the kills by this extraterrestrial lifeform become repetitive before it even begins… Go to Full Review

While thankfully this is no Battlefield Earth, Battle: Los Angeles or Battleship, War Machine doesn’t really offer up many surprising beats as a fairly predictable scenario plays out. Go to Full Review

War Machine is one of the most agonizingly boring films in recent memories, reveling in its garden-variety elements while failing to take advantage of what little novelty it does possess. Go to Full Review

Kaleb B @RT47817320 6h First, I am a graduate of US Army Ranger selection back when it was RIP instead of RASP and served time and 2 deployments with the 75th. So you’ll also know why I am critical and embarrassed by this movie. To be honest, it’s not a terrible action flick. When you judge it on that merit alone, it’s not bad at all and my rating would probably be higher if I didn’t have the experience that I do. It’s fairly intense and a decent story line of a battlefield earth type film. Okay, time for the harsh part. Whomever the military advisors were need to be slapped. Idk if this was an intentional recruiting drive for the rangers, but oof. Please don’t watch this and think that’s what it’s like (minus the alien invasion). Whether it’s the abandonment of the candidates in the wilderness, the availability of live ammo on training grounds, or just the general dialogue… it’s very far from Ranger experience. RLTW! Nice to see Jai Courtney cast in something and not be a villain or a total ahole. See more Timothy E @Tnice17 5d This is a great movie. Can't wait till it come out on DVD. See more Worm W @Wormwood 6d Haha oh my Netflix just throwing money at idiots for some of the dumbest rubbish they can. This is what our streaming fees go towards people. Do not waste your time on this steaming pile of......... See more J. Steven B @RT98260304 6d Great movie! Story line is acctualy realistic. The movie might be rated R, but there isn any nudity, but for that, there are dismembered bodies and a lot of death. Iḿ under the R guideline and ynder the 16 guideline on Netflix, but I still enjoyed it. That mught be cause I watch too much the Rookie... See more Jorge A M @RT73713523 6d Don’t rally understand some of the hate tho movie is getting. It’s one of the most entertaining action movies I’ve seen, of course there would be cliches, but this one uses them in the right moment, so even if you can predict some of them due to the narrative, the movie still work pretty good, without making it boring. If you’re looking for a thrilled action movie (without pretending that you are all about a super elaborated scrtipt) this is. Banger! See more Mike S @RT41455399 Jun 30 Liked Ritchson in Reacher and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which is why I stuck to the bitter end, but this is a very very below ordinary movie. Shamelessly culls scene after scene from other better films and makes a half arsed, ham fisted attempt to shoehorn it into this "story". It fails every time Never believable, but at least the gimmick of only referring to everyone by number means I didn’t waste any time trying to remember names, but in the end, as 81 is walking past charred body parts displaying only their number patches I found I couldn’t even remember which corpse was which poorly acted, badly written, corny stereotype. The annoying one The "is it actually a girl" one The cowardly lion one I assume most of the budget went on the utterly overblown ridiculous effects budget, certainly saved a fortune on casting! If there were such a thing anymore as "straight to video" release, this turkey would by gobbling up corn in aisle one of my local Blockbuster See more Read all reviews
