Critics Consensus

Providing Alan Ritchson an ideal vehicle to flex his brawny charisma, War Machine occasionally clanks when it comes to character depth but otherwise soldiers on to deliver an awesome dose of action spectacle.

It's a science-fiction survival film – the Ranger candidates are carrying blanks – with trace elements of Transformers, Battleship, and Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Somewhat derivative, but modestly enjoyable. Go to Full Review

The film’s R rating is well-deserved thanks to the profusion of burnt and dismembered bodies on view in the alien machine’s wake. Unfortunately, the screenplay by Hughes and co-writer James Beaufort leaves much to be desired. Go to Full Review

It makes for a slicker-than-usual streaming premiere, an easy, drink-your-way-through-it Friday night option for those who wish to remain entirely unchallenged. Go to Full Review
Connor Petrey Pop Culture Leftovers May 17, 2026
War Machine is spoiled by a severe lack of tension and while literally everyone is on the table for the slaughter, the kills by this extraterrestrial lifeform become repetitive before it even begins… Go to Full Review

While thankfully this is no Battlefield Earth, Battle: Los Angeles or Battleship, War Machine doesn’t really offer up many surprising beats as a fairly predictable scenario plays out. Go to Full Review

War Machine is one of the most agonizingly boring films in recent memories, reveling in its garden-variety elements while failing to take advantage of what little novelty it does possess. Go to Full Review

Andy M @RT47186659 16 hrs ago Really enjoyed this one. It’s basically Predator meets Transformers — a group of Army Ranger recruits on their final training exercise get hunted by a massive alien war machine. Simple setup, and honestly that’s part of the appeal. No messing about, just a solid 106-minute action film. Alan Ritchson is great in the lead. He’s got the presence to carry it, and the action is filmed properly — you can actually tell what’s going on, which feels rare these days. The scenery’s a nice change too. It’s not perfect. The characters are all just numbers (81, 57, 7…) so you never really get attached to anyone, which takes the sting out of some of the deaths. The story’s predictable, and Dennis Quaid is completely wasted in a role that could’ve been played by anyone. Critics were mixed on it but audiences seem to be enjoying it more, and I get why — it’s not trying to be clever, it’s just a good bit of Friday night entertainment. Wouldn’t rush to watch it again, but glad I did. See more Marcy D @RT6789932322 2 days ago It was WILD! Unexpectedly enjoyable. See more John W @RT39523818 5 days ago Horrible, who ever wrote this and directed this, it is painfully obvious they have no military experience and could care less about accuracy. I could not get past the beginning. See more Pearlie B @RT569043311622 5 days ago Quite enjoyed it. I have thought that Alan Ritchson was going to become the next in line muscle bound action star in Hollywood that started with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, through to Dwayne Johnson, making entertaining, cheesy action films. War Machine might be Alan Ritchson's Predator. See more Mickey B @Mickerdoo Sep 4, 2026 Beginning is a glorified recruitment video with predictable loss story. Then blindsided by alien robot. Almost comically so. See more Rhonda S @RT62754389 Sep 4, 2026 This was absolutely one of the best movies ever made!! I can’t believe the other reviews are so bad. Alan Ritchson is a great actor and the rest of the cast did a great job as well. The action was amazing and I truly enjoyed this movie. See more Read all reviews
