Critics Consensus

Providing Alan Ritchson an ideal vehicle to flex his brawny charisma, War Machine occasionally clanks when it comes to character depth but otherwise soldiers on to deliver an awesome dose of action spectacle.

It's a science-fiction survival film – the Ranger candidates are carrying blanks – with trace elements of Transformers, Battleship, and Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Somewhat derivative, but modestly enjoyable. Go to Full Review
Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Mar 9
The film’s R rating is well-deserved thanks to the profusion of burnt and dismembered bodies on view in the alien machine’s wake. Unfortunately, the screenplay by Hughes and co-writer James Beaufort leaves much to be desired. Go to Full Review

It makes for a slicker-than-usual streaming premiere, an easy, drink-your-way-through-it Friday night option for those who wish to remain entirely unchallenged. Go to Full Review

War Machine is one of the most agonizingly boring films in recent memories, reveling in its garden-variety elements while failing to take advantage of what little novelty it does possess. Go to Full Review

That said, the film also delights in showing blood, bones and guts, so be warned if you're not in the mood for a glut of flying viscera. Go to Full Review

Al F @RT93957850 1h Absolutely brilliant first half, building up the what I presume was the unexpected death of the script writer whose replacement must have been a teenager with a bedroom full of Transformers. Sadly this can only have coincided with the film budget being cut by 90%, sadly leaving enough to finish the job as an anything-goes sci fi written in the same bedroom. All that setup, cast, location and great props went to waste on a second half reminiscent of Star Wars 1 or more appropriate a Transformers As with matching script depth but without only the one-minute length to endure before getting back to something better. Our replacement script writer successfully dismantled a great first half story and turned it into a total farce, switching genres from gritty human endurance to little more than trash sci fi. It would have been better to have spent the remaining 10% budget on flowers for the bereaved family, See more Marcin Z @RT20853666 7h It's fun, story is predictable, but with 0 expectation and scify trash movies around, it's solid watch option. See more Tim Y @RT01504106 1d Don't really why all the negative reviews. For me, it is nice. Intense and it's a Alan Ritchson kinda movie. Like his other movies... Never give up, against all odds kinda movie and of course... he survived at the end. You will feel that the movie is similar to certain movies we have seen before but not really. I enjoyed it. And after watching... now am waiting for sequel. See more Bobby H. @Romeyclone 2d Super interesting story, well done. Super Fun if you like sci-fi/war movies See more Jose A @RT72275113 4d Although I understand that it is indeed based on a repetitive narrative of humanity rising to the occasion against an impossible threat which by no means should be able to be defeated under so precarious circumstances, that’s the main reason why these type of movies are great at what they aim, which is inspire, entertain and provide metaphorical hope to us, the viewers so, try to look further. Yes, there are touché one-liners, yes, we all know the main character makes it, but look deeper, turn the "critic" off for a while and enjoy the sensation of being part of a story that could build your character, take the fictional bravery and turn it into a usable value in your life. You may not be Ritchson, but the value he impersonates is transferable to reality. See more Luke S @RT35173115 4d Very enjoyable and thrilling all throughout See more Read all reviews
