Critics Consensus

Providing Alan Ritchson an ideal vehicle to flex his brawny charisma, War Machine occasionally clanks when it comes to character depth but otherwise soldiers on to deliver an awesome dose of action spectacle.

It's a science-fiction survival film – the Ranger candidates are carrying blanks – with trace elements of Transformers, Battleship, and Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Somewhat derivative, but modestly enjoyable. Go to Full Review
Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Mar 9
The film’s R rating is well-deserved thanks to the profusion of burnt and dismembered bodies on view in the alien machine’s wake. Unfortunately, the screenplay by Hughes and co-writer James Beaufort leaves much to be desired. Go to Full Review

It makes for a slicker-than-usual streaming premiere, an easy, drink-your-way-through-it Friday night option for those who wish to remain entirely unchallenged. Go to Full Review
Connor Petrey Pop Culture Leftovers May 17
War Machine is spoiled by a severe lack of tension and while literally everyone is on the table for the slaughter, the kills by this extraterrestrial lifeform become repetitive before it even begins… Go to Full Review

While thankfully this is no Battlefield Earth, Battle: Los Angeles or Battleship, War Machine doesn’t really offer up many surprising beats as a fairly predictable scenario plays out. Go to Full Review

War Machine is one of the most agonizingly boring films in recent memories, reveling in its garden-variety elements while failing to take advantage of what little novelty it does possess. Go to Full Review

Ramith N @RT13906579 1d War Machine is an absolute masterpiece of modern action! It feels like a glorious 80s throwback but injected with the insane, hyper-tactical combat choreography of The Raid or a high-octane anime. Alan Ritchson is pure badass energy. But what really surprised me was the emotional depth—the sense of brotherhood among the Rangers gives the high-stakes violence real weight. Non-stop adrenaline from start to finish! See more Alexis L. @SpagooterNooter 1d The acting was good from the cast. The set looked really good. Storyline… eh… if I wouldn’t have been watching this with my husband I probably would’ve turned it off halfway through. See more Alex F. @SwooshCoach 2d Good popcorn flick. High entertainment value. See more Malinda S @MaliBoo 2d Enjoyed it as a straight unsubtle action movie. Ritchson is watchable. The machine is convincing enough. It had an emotional drive. A clumsy one but it was there. I would have liked them to attempt to understand more about the particulars of how it worked. It's targeting systems etc. See more Tommy K. @Samuraisnowman 4d Compelling concept. They borrowed a lot of scenes from other movies in such a blatant way in my opinion but it was still a fun watch with ok acting See more Anderjz U @Urban1419 4d Absolutely gripping film start to finish, great acting and special effects, waiting for the sequel but need to keep the original cast in it.
