William B. Collins Philadelphia Inquirer Once you are let in on the secret, there isn't much to do but enjoy the suffering and there is something just as dishonest about that as there is about booby-trapping an audience. David K This is one of those formulaic 70's romance films that can't overcome the formula. Yes, Sidney Poitier is iconic and his direction is fine. But, the canned score and the unoriginal story relegates it to the meh category. I watched it as part of the daylong programming block of TCM's Warner Bros. 100-year anniversary tribute to romances "Warner Falls in Love". These programming blocks were often designed to showcase the evolution of the studio's work in specific areas. If you're interested in the entire block, the films they showcased (in order): A Midsummer's Night Dream (1935), All This and Heaven Too (1940), A Warm December (1973), Fanny (1961), The Prince and the Showgirl (1957), and The Goodbye Girl (1977). Of those films, the first and the last films and Fanny stood out for me. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/07/24 Full Review Steve D A bit too melodramatic but the acting is strong. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/08/23 Full Review Audience Member A slow, moving, and mature romance story from Sidney Poitier which has its tender moments, but little else.
On a quiet lazy day where the sun is shining outside and you have absolutely nothing else better to do, go ahead and check this one out. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Frances H A ground breaking film that also harks to 70s Love Story tragic romance, but also the first time a black couple were presented in this way, showing the black couple in an elite lifestyle, mixed with African culture that sort of presages Black Panther, and very different from the American black experience f Poitier's earlier films such a Rasin in the Sun and The Defiant Ones. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/01/19 Full Review ashley h A Warm December is an amazing film. It is about Dr. Matt Younger and his daughter arrive for a month-long visit to London for dirt-bike racing. Sidney Poitier and Yvette Curtis give amazing performances. The script is well written. Sidney Poitier also did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama and romance. A Warm December is a must see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Sidney Poitier pulls double-duty for the 1973 clunker A Warm December, but I'm sorry to say it does nothing for his reputation as an actor or as a director.
