Moniek B I hesitated to watch this film, because I was going to read the book first. But once I realized I kept procrastinating on getting the book, I decided to just stream the film. I’m so glad I made that decision. The message of the movie is a worthy message. It resonates with me as a woman who truly values being honest with yourself about who you are, and living free. Beyond the message and themes of freedom, courage, and self discovery… I simply found this film beautiful to look at. The way scenes were framed… where the camera lingered… One scene, where the lead is buying a book from the woman she is about to fall in love with…you can see her following her as the camera tracks them walking along the counter. You feel how these two women are on same path although one of them is in front… in the lead. I think this so perfectly paralleled the journey as Tonya proceeds to learn herself through her time with Satin, who was clearly more experienced. It is hard to describe what I mean, but there were touches like that throughout the film. Where I felt there were echos to the action. Even her first meeting with Malcolm was a car wreck. A tad bit of foreshadowing that some bumps may be in that relationship’s road. 😅 I could go on and on, but I think I should stop before the spoilers spill. See this movie. I truly enjoyed it. P.S. Aunt Jo wasn’t on screen that often, but every time she was… electric! I loved that character. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/27/25 Full Review Read all reviews
