Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member This drama film tells the story of a pope who as soon as he is elected realizes that he is not suitable for his office. The Italian director Nanni Moretti tells this story in an ironic but always simple and sensitive way. Michel Piccoli manages to get completely into the character and to give an excellent acting performance. The film is almost a prophecy of the subsequent renunciation of the papal throne by Benedict XVI. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Been on my to watch list for years and now I finally come to watch it I've really no idea why it was ever on there in the first place. A paper thin idea for a story which meanders around and becomes a nonsense at points. Massively underwhelming. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member slow, didascalic, poor despite the curious subject. really disappointing on the point of view of dialogues, acting and final cut. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A light-hearted cuddly movie with a pope I can like a lot. While most of the time it has a likable innocence, it really has its best moments when it breaks with that. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member good com-dram almost doc like quality Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Radheyan Simonpillai NOW Toronto Such slapstick actually works, reminding us that the clergy are people, too, and the Vatican runs on electricity instead of a higher power. Rated: 3/5 Jun 1, 2012 Full Review Peter Howell Toronto Star Always the star of his movies, even when he shouldn't be, the atheist Moretti gets caught up in his own papal bull. But Piccoli's blessed empathy prevails. Rated: 2.5/4 May 31, 2012 Full Review Joe Williams St. Louis Post-Dispatch This is rich material that Moretti mines for both superficial absurdity and deep pathos. But he refuses to forge an orthodox happy ending, let alone a tinny satire. Rated: 3/4 May 11, 2012 Full Review Diego Batlle Otroscines.com Moretti proposes a personal, disquieting and provocative look at themes such as faith and personal beliefs. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 6, 2019 Full Review Patrick Gamble CineVue A hugely enjoyable experience that's sadly let down by a rather lacklustre and uninspiring ending.
