      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

We Summon the Darkness makes the most of its rather pedestrian plot with palpable affection for genre formula, an appealing cast, and a sharp sense of humor.

Jeffrey P Takes some interesting twists and turns and isn't clumsy or tripping over itself in doing so. Unfortunately, the ending is seen a mile away and ordinary. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/25/23 Full Review cry m Kinda makes you think twice before you just go home with someone. Common sense, lesson learned. Survivalism, action, good acting Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/25/23 Full Review eduardo b not memorable, but ok to pass the time Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/25/23 Full Review prawnda s it's not entirely bad, and has some decent cast members/production values, but it's very poorly paced. the twist happens 30 mins into the film, and i will say for it that that 30 minutes felt much longer due to its density, but looking at the timestamp to find there's more than another hour left has me doubting that the writers have anything left to say. basically all the characters do is make irrational mistakes or get into frustrating arguments to pad out the runtime. to say the least, the twist is not believable. there could be a thousand different ways to take the film in an exciting direction, but it just feels very aimless and mostly consists of meaningless filler once the ruse is up. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review jelisije j A movie where the story makes sense? Actors did a decent job? Can't hate it, but I can't love it either. Nick Schager The Daily Beast A rollicking B-movie satire about those who truly have blood on their hands. Feb 2, 2021 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times What really sets We Summon the Darkness apart ... is its joyous - if nasty - celebration of the female rock fan at a crucial point in her development. Rated: 3/5 Apr 18, 2020 Full Review Glenn Kenny RogerEbert.com The proceedings are not entirely unamusing in their lurid way, but they're also not nearly as clever as the filmmakers believed or hoped they would be. Rated: 2/4 Apr 10, 2020 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a palpable misfire that squanders its strong first act. Rated: 2/4 Aug 10, 2022 Full Review Maria Lattila The Digital Fix We Summon the Darkness is a wickedly funny and delicious piece of genre cinema. It's a horror film that doesn't necessarily aim to scare or terrorise us but to take us on a gnarly rollercoaster ride along with its doomed characters. Rated: 6/10 Aug 10, 2021 Full Review Alix Turner Ready Steady Cut A story of metalhead (or Satanist?) boys vs. girls in 1980s Christian America; perfect set-up for a slasher, but this is not so formulaic by a long shot.
