Sgt. "Big Mike" Stone (Wallace Beery), a decorated veteran now serving as an instructor at an Army Air Corps flying school, presides over the budding military career of his son, "Little Mike" (Robert Young). Big Mike wants to make sure his son follows in his footsteps, learning to become a man and making the right choice between the nice girl (Maureen O'Sullivan) and the salacious divorcée (Rosalind Russell). Little Mike is unsure about both matters of the heart and his military service.
