Anastasia M terribly bland film made popular solely by the conventional physical beauty of the cast. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/26/24 Full Review Audience Member Spoilers: Troubling, messy, but Sofia/Sammy and Madelyn/Emily shine as the coming of age, stuck in the summer resort fog of boys, parties, rich vs. poor, and drugs/booze teen-agers, particularly Sofia Hublitz, who shows nice girl, smart girl, alienated girl in a broken family. Murder, rape/incest with a half brother alters this from resort town idleness to everything changes, time to smell the coffee and grow up. But the cover story holds and the dead young man is written off as a drunk who partied and ran a truck off the road, down a hill and died as Emily was able to eject herself from the truck. We wonder if the girl friends, one rich short-timer in town, one poor townie, were never friends, at least it seems to be going that way. But the rich girl Emily cannot abandon her friend Sammy, and concocts a story to cover up what really happened, surprising us all. A little like Gere/Winger overcoming the aviator/townie problem after all, but Emily and parents go back home. The police chief, asked by Det. LaSalle, Shakira Barrera, who also shines, if he bought the truth of the story, said it is true enough since two girls are in their beds and only the one guy is gone. But LaSalle is too good a cop not to suspect the story is bogus. It goes to show that the societal norm is not what happened, but what you can prove happened. One wonders if the girls' lives are unwittingly over, ruined, since they cannot forget that Sammy attacked the guy who seemed to be trying for sex with Emily at the time, Sammy's half bro who had just raped Sammy, and who ended up dead, as it is dark and we never really see if she hit him with a rock or something in the head, or he hit his head when he fell, or what. And it was Sammy who drifted the truck down the hill. Sofia has some real "it," some magnetic acting chops, and a bright future. Madelyn Cline, the more extroverted in the piece, too. It pulled me along, the key surprise was not all that surprising, but it was a better film than many I've seen. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
