Christian Zilko indieWire When taken as a short story collection with a fixation on water, there’s a lot to enjoy. But its influences are so obvious that it’s hardly surprising when, yes, a mature kid inevitably befriends a wise old man on the street. Rated: B- Sep 25, 2023 Full Review Carmen Paddock Screen Queens What Doesn’t Float – a collection of seven narratively disparate vignettes – starts from this source of life, death, opportunity, and frustration to explore the tragicomic, mundane travails of life across the city, possibly even on the same day. Nov 23, 2023 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review The film showcases notable talent and evokes various emotions, whether they are heart-wrenching, disturbing, or sorrowful. It invites us to take a look at the many ways we find to keep living even as we near our breaking points. Rated: 2.5/4 Nov 17, 2023 Full Review Aaron Neuwirth We Live Entertainment As a fairly raw take on characters existing in New York, it’s got enough stories to tell that work. Rated: 6/10 Oct 5, 2023 Full Review Avi Offer NYC Movie Guru Gritty and doesn't overstay its welcome at a running time of 1 hour and 10 minutes, but it's ultimately less than the sum of its parts. Sep 21, 2023 Full Review Shelagh Rowan-Legg ScreenAnarchy What Doesn't Float is a wonderfully crafted series of stories - each finding a different meaning to its place, to its character, to its exposure of the life of this corner of the city, and what it means to be a part of it. Blobbo X Many pointless, unconnected vignettes. There's no common thread that I can see. (Maybe you need to be from New York.) Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/24 Full Review Judith R I saw this film in New York on the recommendation of a friend. Since it was an independent film, I went in with very realistic expectations of a new film by young artists. I was absolutely stunned and delighted by the level of craft I saw -- evocative and refined production values, wonderful performances, first-rate, sensitive direction and a superb script. If you know New York, you'll see situations that prompt immediate recognition and if you don't know the city, you'll get to see far beyond the Woody Allen dreamscapes of Manhattan. I could not recommend this film more highly! It's a wonderful ride! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/27/23 Full Review Marco C Loved this movie! A series of very different and imaginative vignettes about New York, New York and its waterways, beaches, docks, canals...written and filmed and played by people who obviously understand and love the city and its inhabitants, all trying to ...keep floating. It's funny, poignant, sad, absurd also sometimes and it all adds up to a great moment at the movies... Did not know anything Luca Balser but this is a diamond in a rough, a very talented director... In a very impressive cast, I would single out Pauline Chalamet and Lily Sondik. Go see them! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/24/23 Full Review Alison Q I love this film! The direction, music, and acting are exceptional and the movie provided six unique stories that carried such depth, I wanted more after each vignette ended. The stories highlighted extremely different types of characters, yet all of them provided a realistic look into the real-life moments that make up not just NYC, but the human condition. With both smart humor and dark moments, the narratives and character make-ups were threaded in similarity by a common theme that is deeply relatable: the struggle to stay afloat and find your way. Luca Balser should continue his gift of direction. Pauline Chalamet, Lily Sondik, and Joel Nagle are stand outs. Go see it!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
