Smarter, fresher, and funnier than a modern vampire movie has any right to be, What We Do in the Shadows is bloody good fun.

Salem K Dry humour, great cast, hilarious throughout, and a fun premise. There's not a single aspect not to love. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review David W "Nosferatu" meets "Best in Show". How can a comedy this hilarious also be one of the best vampire films you'll ever see? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/24 Full Review Robert L In the realm of vampire cinema, where the same tropes and clichés have been rehashed time and again, "What We Do in the Shadows" stands as a refreshingly original and hilarious take on the genre. Helmed by the comedic geniuses Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, this mockumentary-style film follows the lives of four vampires who share a flat in Wellington, New Zealand. What makes "What We Do in the Shadows" truly exceptional is its subversion of vampire stereotypes. Instead of portraying these creatures as fearsome monsters, Waititi and Clement present them as endearingly flawed and relatable individuals, grappling with everyday mundane tasks like laundry and house chores. The film's humor is sharp, witty, and often absurd, making it a delight for fans of both mockumentary and vampire-related fare. The characters of "What We Do in the Shadows" are a masterstroke of creation, each with their own unique quirks and personalities. Viago (Waititi), the fastidious leader of the house, is obsessed with maintaining his appearance and upholding vampire tradition. Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), a former vampire who was turned in the 1980s, embraces the modern world with a penchant for fashion and technology. Vladislav (Clement), a 16th-century vampire, is still haunted by the death of his familiar, and spends his time reminiscing about his past glories. And Petyr (Ben Fransham), an ancient vampire trapped in a decaying body, is perpetually grumpy and demanding. The film's success has spawned a spinoff television series of the same name, which continues to explore the lives of the vampire flatmates and introduce new and hilarious characters. With its creative premise, sharp writing, and endearingly flawed characters, "What We Do in the Shadows" is a must-watch for anyone who loves a good laugh. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/24 Full Review Alec B Uses it's simple concept to great comedic effect and material alternates between a slacker roommate comedy and a spoof of the vampire genre quite easily. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/13/23 Full Review Bob Waititi is A positive Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/12/23 Full Review Bill F Nowhere near as funny as it likes to think it is. Just becomes irritating after a while. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Claudia Puig USA Today If Twilight made you queasy and Dark Shadows felt like a missed opportunity, this pitch-perfect genre spoof is worth relishing. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 13, 2015 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader I'm so sick of vampires I'd have pounded a stake into my own heart not to have to watch this, but it turns out to be a pitch-perfect spoof of MTV's The Real World and a sly satire on millennial slackerdom. Rated: 3/4 Mar 6, 2015 Full Review Patrick Z. McGavin Chicago Sun-Times The New Zealand-made art comedy What We Do in the Shadows is a bracing reminder of how the right burst of energy and style breathes fresh ideas into a genre threatened with creative exhaustion. Rated: 3/4 Mar 6, 2015 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Manages not only to be hilarious in its own right, but also offers plenty of gags that will resonate even more strongly with horror fans. Rated: 5/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Jennifer Bisset CNET It is the kind of content we came to expect from director-writer-actor Taika Waititi. Apr 20, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Rarely does the movie miss a beat, and its cleverness shows itself in a host of ways. It's subtly subversive, subtly satirical, and openly absurd. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
