Critics Consensus

Smarter, fresher, and funnier than a modern vampire movie has any right to be, What We Do in the Shadows is bloody good fun.

Claudia Puig USA Today If Twilight made you queasy and Dark Shadows felt like a missed opportunity, this pitch-perfect genre spoof is worth relishing. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 13, 2015 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader I'm so sick of vampires I'd have pounded a stake into my own heart not to have to watch this, but it turns out to be a pitch-perfect spoof of MTV's The Real World and a sly satire on millennial slackerdom. Rated: 3/4 Mar 6, 2015 Full Review Patrick Z. McGavin Chicago Sun-Times The New Zealand-made art comedy What We Do in the Shadows is a bracing reminder of how the right burst of energy and style breathes fresh ideas into a genre threatened with creative exhaustion. Rated: 3/4 Mar 6, 2015 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Manages not only to be hilarious in its own right, but also offers plenty of gags that will resonate even more strongly with horror fans. Rated: 5/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Jennifer Bisset CNET It is the kind of content we came to expect from director-writer-actor Taika Waititi. Apr 20, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Rarely does the movie miss a beat, and its cleverness shows itself in a host of ways. It's subtly subversive, subtly satirical, and openly absurd. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Michael V Some interviews with some vampires What We Do in the Shadows is a 2014 New Zealand mockumentary horror comedy film written and directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi 🧛 Not bad, but not my favourite either 😐 Meh, it passed the time. Just. 😐 👍🏼👎🏼 Vampire housemates try to cope with the complexities of modern life and show a newly turned hipster some of the perks of being undead Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/24/24 Full Review Christian K Solidly funny and much more in line with the show then I was expecting. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Nick R Funny and original. It's a good movie with good laughs. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Will R Came into this one much later on the back of a lot of people saying how good it was. However, not for me at all. Maybe it was just not to my humour, but felt the comedy elements were daft and tbh not that funny. I did like the production and design and felt that what it lacked was made up for by the performances of the actors. That said classic it is not!! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Rob G How did I go 10 years without hearing of this one? Just saw it for the first time and loved it! It was so funny! Of course the comparisons to Spinal Tap are there but put that aside. This is a really good movie. Even the special effects were outstanding. Can't recommend this enough if you like weird comedies. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review phil l Having watched the TV series first, and really enjoying it, this was just as good! So many parts that give that "delayed laugh" because it's so out of nowhere, a little more than slap-stick comedy. Has to do with the clever mockumentary feel, one of the originals and it's worth watching a few times! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
