Leovanni E You Know Pixar's Up Is A Masterpiece With Rip-offs Like This Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/12/24 Full Review Oliver F Can’t believe Up ripped off this masterpiece Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Audience Member When I stumbled upon What's Up: Balloon to the Rescue at a car boot sale, I knew I had to grab it. I’d heard about it online, often described as a hilariously terrible knockoff of Up, riddled with questionable content and dubious quality. Naturally, I was curious to see how it could possibly live up (or down) to its reputation. To my surprise—and perhaps slight disappointment—it wasn’t as overtly offensive as I had anticipated. However, what the movie lacked in controversy, it more than made up for in sheer absurdity. As soon as I got home, I eagerly popped it into the DVD player. For the next 40 minutes, I was utterly transfixed by what can only be described as a mesmerizing disasterpiece. The plot, if you can call it that, is a chaotic whirlwind of baffling decisions, nonsensical dialogue, and slapdash animation. But it’s the characters that truly steal the show. John Pier, in particular, is a standout. Whether intentional or not, his personality, voice acting, and general demeanor encapsulate everything that’s so wonderfully terrible about this film. Every line he delivers is dripping with unintentional hilarity, making him a gem among a cast of otherwise bewildering characters. What elevates What's Up to “best-worst movie” status is its uncanny charm. Despite (or perhaps because of) its cheap animation, questionable pacing, and bizarre story beats, it has an earnestness that’s impossible to dislike. You can tell it’s trying so hard to be meaningful, even as it misses the mark entirely. It’s the kind of movie you can’t look away from, laughing in disbelief at every twist and turn. This is not a good movie by any conventional standard, but it’s a masterpiece of unintentional comedy. I had so much fun watching it that I’m already looking forward to revisiting it. For fans of so-bad-it’s-good cinema, What's Up: Balloon to the Rescue is an absolute must-watch. Just prepare to question everything you know about storytelling—and possibly reality—while you enjoy the ride.
