Bobby Riggs (Ron Silver), a middle-aged former tennis champion, challenges female players to exhibition matches as a way to make money and generate publicity for himself. The chauvinistic Riggs is riding high after he defeats Margaret Court (Matt Letscher), a top-ranked player. Then he publicly challenges another woman, Billie Jean King (Holly Hunter). King accepts, but takes the match more seriously than Riggs, and uses the ensuing media circus to promote women's equality in sports.
