Josh Slater-Williams Vague Visages When Shizuku and a group of supporting players break into a performance of John Denver’s “Country Roads” about halfway through, this modest gesture takes on a major stirring quality thanks to Whisper of the Heart’s surrounding aesthetic. Nov 14, 2023 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy A satisfying effort. Rated: 3/4 Sep 18, 2021 Full Review Charles Solomon FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) If there's a Ghibli film that is under-appreciated, it's this one. Jul 18, 2020 Full Review Princess Weekes The Mary Sue Shizuku is a fantastic heroine and for all my creatively inclined people, if you haven't seen this movie yet, it'll remind you of the work and honing of craft needed to be great at anything you love. Jul 11, 2019 Full Review Suzette Smith The Stranger (Seattle, WA) The film also unforgettably repurposes John Denver's "Country Roads," and applies it to everyday Japanese life via a number of covers. If that sounds too good to be true, it's not. It totally works somehow. Jul 11, 2019 Full Review James Berardinelli ReelViews Many animated films are pitched at kids and, as such, often seem condescending. There's nothing of that sort here. izzy such an underrated ghibli film, cute story with a puppy love kinda feel to it. so nostalgic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/10/24 Full Review Derek G Hands down one of my favorite movies of all time! So glad I was able to see this on the big screen this year for Ghibli fest! I love them showing the less well known Ghibli movies this year! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/31/24 Full Review Jamie D Ah!~ Whisper of the Heart live action was truly a dream come true if I’ve ever lived long enough to see one!🫶🏽 The story stayed true to the original movie w/ uttermost flattery to the all characters as you remembered them The cast chosen both young & adult versions were breathtaking to watch :) Out of all the Studio Ghibli films to get a live action I’m so happy it was whisper of the heart b/c it isn’t a westernized Lovie Dovie romance but a satisfying episodic tale of individual self growth w/ innocence of finding love in the process of living a dream driven life (//_^) Now for my unbiased opinion of the film it's a very captivating story, cute characters, rich imaginative scenes, delightful performances and a heartfelt message!! Giving it a solid 10/10..!!🙌🏾😁 P.s Fingers crossed that they'll make more live action adaptation films from the other iconic Studio Ghibli masterpieces! :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Jay W "Whisper of the Heart" is the gold standard when it comes to slice of life story movies. Despite what some of the promotions may lead audiences to believe, this story is not a supernatural adventure. It is a simple down to Earth coming to age tale. What makes the movie so enjoyable, is just how novel it is. Some things are more obvious. The movie doesn't have a villain or an external conflict. The movie is nearly 2 hours and nothing all that exciting happens. For some, that will be a deal breaker. For a lot of younger audiences, this movie might be dull. For what it's worth, I watched it with a 5-year old, and the animation and characters were engaging enough to keep his interest throughout. Another factor that make the movie stand out is how much the parents are involved in the story. They are not the villain, or neglectful. They just sit down and have an honest conversation with their daughter. The sister is spot on how siblings react, and the best friends have real chemistry together. The themes the movie teaches are surprisingly refreshing. More people, especially young kids, need to learn what this movie is teaching. The whole thing is just so sweet and endearing, I can't help but love it. Much like a geode, there is a lot of valuable gems to be found passed its rough edges. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Erica K I literally cannot explain how much i absolutely LOVE this movie. Its probably my favorite Ghibli film right now! I very much enjoy this film because of the simple yet SUPER RELATABLE situation of motivation, block, education, future, and also the idea of wanting more in life just like in the movies/books the main character read. In addition i enjoyed this film very much because it didn't have to do with anything sci-fi or fantasy connected like other Ghibli films, but instead took on a realistic approach and expressed the stress of life upon these characters into a very well animated masterpiece. Good plot, side stories, animation, and characters. LOVE THIS MOVIE! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/17/24 Full Review Lucas G I don't have much to say, and it's simply one of the best films I've seen in my life.
