Detective Wally "The Fox" Benton (Red Skelton) and his fiancée, Carol Lambert (Ann Rutherford), travel south when they hear of a mystery involving her college friend Ellamae Downs (Diana Lewis). As Wally investigates the situation, murder and hidden treasure both factor into the proceedings, with the sleuth's nemesis, Chester Conway (Rags Ragland), appearing to stir up trouble. Before long Wally and Carol are in peril, but the hapless hero does his best to win the day.
