Andre Sennwald New York Times Filmed against a Hawaiian background, White Heat is a humorless account of the amorous difficulties of a young sugar planter. Sep 16, 2020 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Film has all the earmarks of authenticity. The camera, however, lacked the vision of the average travelogue. or newsreel clip for which this locale is old territory. Sep 16, 2020 Full Review James T. Hamada The Nippu Jiji (Honolulu) There are many spots where the film looks like the Infant talkies back in 1929, and the acting is generally amateurish. Audience Member shares a title with the great jimmy cagney gangsta pic but no gangsters here Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A gangster movie that is so much more than that. Each act could have been fleshed out into its own awesome movie: Drama and schemes within a gang, an undercover cop and a criminal mastermind share a prison cell, and a cat and mouse story of a gang on the run. Instead, we get an extremely dense, thrilling movie. The sequence near the end of the movie that shows tactics police used at the time was really neat. Plus, a truly explosive ending. (Note: this review is for the 1949 film of the same title starring James Cagney, but it is not on this website yet.) Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
