Most of the acting was ok... its not the type of movie that requires truly dramatic acting (though maybe thats what it needed). The main problem is the lack of a main story arc, and a jumble of several internal arcs that were simply incoherent. It's just one of those movies that doesn't really do anything... no tugging on heart strings... no suspension of disbelief... no wrapping you up in the protagonist... no clear antagonist... Just not a good film.

Robert Duvall written and directed this film and no disrespect to the actor but it seems like he had too many ideas and characters for this movie. Robert introduced so many plot lines and characters that he would've been better off writing a 10 episode tv series than a crammed up 1 hour and 48 minute movie. Had potential but ultimately it was a waste of time.

So much talent! Duvall plays his stereotypical crusty old country man with Franco as his gay son that he never accepted. Texas rangers pull open a cold case file and the family secrets come out (racism, homophobia). But you're not drawn in...it's sterile.
