Ed Gonzalez Los Angeles Times This is lyricism at its most extreme, at once gripping and off-putting because Archer views his characters as if he were gawking at them through the bars of a cage. May 1, 2007 Full Review Wesley Morris Boston Globe [Director] Archer isn't necessarily taking us anywhere new, but his movie's rapture is beautiful inside and out. Rated: 3/4 Apr 13, 2007 Full Review John Hartl Seattle Times Wild Tigers I Have Known studiously avoids the clichs of the genre. It's also exasperatingly inconclusive. Its dreamy, enigmatic characters often fail to engage. Rated: 2/4 Apr 13, 2007 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter Archer fleshes out his very slim story with beautiful, impressionistic slices of his hometown. Tom Gilroy is hilarious as a school principal whose pep rallies have to be seen to be appreciated. Fairuza May 12, 2020 Full Review Karina Longworth Cinematical The movie wears its ancestors on its sleeve -- Tarnation and My Own Private Idaho, sure, but also Kenneth Anger, Warhol, Harmony Korine. Jeff M This is undoubtedly one of the strangest and most unusual coming-of-age films that I have ever and probably will ever see. It is not entirely successful, and I feel confident that I won't be watching it again any time soon, but it certainly got under my skin, and I have to admire the filmmakers for remaining uncompromising and seemingly true to their vision. I also give a lot of credit and respect to young Stumpf, who is asked to do things in this movie that had to be scary and uncomfortable. He only has one other movie on his IMDb page, the horrible Madonna film THE NEXT BEST THING, but he comes across here naturally and without a shred of ingenue artificiality. It gets to be a bit heavy-handed at times and a plot point or two are a bit hard to swallow, but, limitations aside, I appreciate a film that I can honestly say is not quite like anything I've seen before. It's uncomfortable and unsettling, but I found it worth watching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Audience Member Cam Archer's overtly stylized view of childhood sexuality is harmed by the intended approach which feels far too distant. That said, I suspect this artist has fully realized his vision. Unfortunately, this vision and the way in which Archer tells his story feels forced and feels too vague. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member A very touching portrayal of what it is like to be 13 and different and gay. I know I was. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Slight gay coming-of-age film seems very self-important. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member While the storyline is simple enough, this artsy (and boy do I mean artsy) indie flick becomes convoluted in a messy web of pretentious visuals that pick you up and drop you back down, only to leave you with nothing by the end of the film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member An interesting perspective into the mind of a child and his sexuality.
