What to Know

Critics Consensus

Writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait's first foray into horror doesn't break any new ground, but it does wring fresh terror from a well-worn genre formula -- and offers a few nasty laughs in the bargain.

Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Despite the impressively committed performances by the two leads and the screenplay's touches of sly humor, the proceedings are mostly all too redolent of the endless found-footage horror films that have followed in the wake of The Blair Witch Project Jan 5, 2015 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com "Willow Creek" is a defiant slow burn. Rated: 3/4 Jun 6, 2014 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Mr. Goldthwait gives us lovely, buttery daylight scenes, nicely relaxed leads and dialogue that pays attention to fluctuating gender dynamics. Jun 5, 2014 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The experience is one you’ll not soon forget. Rated: 3/4 Jul 18, 2022 Full Review Craig Schroeder Battleship Pretension Bobcat Goldthwait's Willow Creek is the first film in quite some time to give me those foundation shaking, temperature-changing scares. Mar 4, 2021 Full Review Jordy Sirkin Jordy Reviews It Willow Creek builds suspense in the most minimalist of ways, but the time it takes to get you there, combined with a short payoff, ultimately lets the viewer down. Bruce M Found-footage movies are inherently dumb, pandering to viewers who don't want to consider the absurdity of what they're viewing or where the footage originated. "Willow Creek" is the exception that proves the rule. The actors are likeable and have tremendous chemistry, and the interviews in the first half with the townspeople are believable. Some humor is present, too. A slight movie, but still enjoyable and certainly better than the crap "creators" put on YouTube, etc., as this was made by someone, Bobcat Goldthwaite, who has actually written and directed films. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/26/25 Full Review Jessicia M This found footage-style film plunges viewers immediately into the story that sets a straightforward, immersive tone. The location is visually appealing, offering some pretty scenery that contrasts nicely with the horror elements. The actors were good, mainly the woman, while the man comes across as somewhat immature throughout the film, whining mostly. While the film nods to The Blair Witch Project through some mirrored scenes, it fails to capture the same level of suspense. It takes a long while for things to start happening, and parts are really drawn out, like the tent sequence. This often drags down the pacing of the whole film and makes me want to just fast-forward through the whole thing. Additionally, the multiple musical styles used by the town folk felt unnecessary and added to the runtime without adding much to the story. Given the film’s shorter overall length, some scenes could have been trimmed to build tension more effectively. However, the reveal of the monsters was genuinely frightening and one of the film's highlights. Overall, while it's an engaging watch with some effective scares, it’s not something I’d revisit. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/22/25 Full Review Audience Member A monumental feat of boredom. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review Damien F Absolutely nothing happens. I feel like the “real critics” are always opposite of what actually people like. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/16/25 Full Review Sarfaraz A A couple travels to Willow Creek to investigate the legends of Bigfoot. The beginning is filled with documentary-style interviews of locals, hanging out at filming locations, and photos with Bigfoot art, including a restaurant that serves Bigfoot sandwiches. The last segment in the movie is like that from the movie "The Blair Witch Project (1999)." The movie may be for those who love to sit through slowly building stories. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/07/25 Full Review Al P Acting was good. Story was good. Abit disappointed with the end, it was very fast? Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/25 Full Review Read all reviews
