Observant and wise about boys in puberty yet impish and carefree when necessary and never idealizing the cold and dreary countryside they travel through, Winter Flies is a lovely little film that's as comfortable as an old sweater and almost as warm.

Two boys, one a 12-year-old and the other a 14-year-old embark on a road trip across the Czech Republic in a stolen Audi, as they'll encounter lots of adventures and misadventures along the way. The humor here can be quite crude and outrageous, but I only found part of it to be effectively funny, while the remainder fell flat or might be categorized as mean-spirited or just evoked sadness.
