Ian Bunting Daily Record (UK) As a complete package, Wintertide doesn’t chill you to the bone like it could but its fresh spin on zombies, uncomfortable atmosphere and engaging lead could ensure a sleepless night awaiting Santa’s arrival next week. Ben D Wintertide would’ve benefitted from less dialogue (maybe go full No One Will Save You) and committed to the eerie atmosphere of eternal darkness. We go mad without the sun. One of my most underrated horror movies, 30 Days of Night, revolves around this very issue. In Wintertide, zombie-like automatons roam the streets of a small Canadian town. When they find you, they don’t eat your brains or masticate on chunks of flesh, but seemingly suck your soul out of your body through your mouth. Beth (Niamh Carolan) participates in a neighborhood watch that reports these “strays” to a dog-catcher-like company that collects them and deposits the transient beings to a medical facility-like center. How the local economy functions with these things walking around is never really addressed; neither is how they started or what is being done to stop them. The ulterior messaging concerns itself with inherited depression, I think… Some of the acting isn’t great and unfortunately there are a couple scenes that are just very bad. When Beth and Natalie (Solange Sokram) are “stuck” in a large house while strays mosey around their car, they lament that “there’s no other way out of here”. I find it hard to believe a house that size only has one door. Moreover, without a hint of sarcasm, Beth actually calls Natalie “straycist” for demeaning the creatures. I can recommend this movie for the auditory effects and its creepy countenance. It’s a decent enough, low-budget horror for a frigid Winter night. This is the kind of movie that I’d like to see remade with a larger budget and more refined concept for what it wants to be.
