Nell Minow RogerEbert.com Stiles does make great use of her experience as an actor in her casting and work with the actors. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Courtney Howard Variety Although the memory of this film might not stick around for as long as that of a lost love, it more than earns the postcard sentimentality of its title. Jan 16, 2025 Full Review Alissa Wilkinson New York Times Something about the rhythm feels off: too many pauses, not enough of the propulsion necessary to make the movie sing. Jan 16, 2025 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix Wish You Were Here drowns in a cesspool of schmaltz and a manipulative plot reveal. It's very possible for people to fall in love as quickly as the movie's characters do, but none of it looks believable in this dull romance. Maribel F Another case of critics be damned….the story and visuals were poignant and believable based on the casting and Stiles direction. The amazing score brought home a sweet melancholy note throughout the film to perfectly accompany sweet simple dialogue. One of those movies that doesn’t try so hard as to over-the-top suck but just enough to be achingly bittersweet. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review Jack S AA Actor Jimmie Fails, who played Seth, took the L as AA actors always do. Charlotte meets some sick ME guy named Adam. And they fall in love. He does not tell her but breaks things off because he's a wuss of a man. Then her roommate Helen tells her to get on a dating site to meet people. She does. Charlotte comes across this AA guy named Seth. He invites her to the football field to meet for their first date. She invites helen. They all meet up. Within days, Helen falls head over heels with seth's sports teammate and winds up moving in with him, getting engaged. Meanwhile, Seth is kissing Charlotte's ass trying to get her to show the smallest sign of interest in him and be this AA prince and gets rejected by this ugly chick. Anyway, Charlotte is head over heels for Adam who treats her like garbage once she visits him in the hospital. And sends Seth into oblivion. Jimmie Fails, bro, you deserve so much more respect. Please get with Tyler Perry and have him set you up on success with an AA cast, with females that will fall head over heels for you! Please. I am so tired of seeing AA men at the bottom of the field trying to get with these WGs and made to eat their crap! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/12/25 Full Review SkyRo P The highly anticipated film adaptation of the acclaimed novel "Wish You Were Here" is set to hit theaters in 2025, marking the directorial debut of Julia Stiles. The cast features Mena Massoud and Isabella Furman in lead roles. The plot centers around a man who finds himself deeply in love, yet is faced with the heart-wrenching reality of a brain tumor that causes memory loss and emotional turmoil. Their relationship largely unfolds in his mind as he grapples with his condition in the hospital, creating a poignant narrative about love and loss. While the film aims to be a touching love story, it suffers from pacing issues. The initial stages of the romance feel hurried, and the character of Alex, who is central to the story, seems to fade into the background far too quickly. This departure from the source material's pacing detracts from the emotional weight of the narrative, as Alex’s presence is crucial to the story’s impact. Though I found the film somewhat engaging and capable of being rewatched, it lacks a compelling quality that would draw me back multiple times. The casting choices were commendable, particularly Gabby Mono-Abdy, who portrayed the protagonist's best friend with remarkable skill. Her performance stood out as a highlight. Ultimately, the film’s rushed storytelling and tight budget are evident, leading to a fast-paced experience that doesn’t allow the emotional depth to develop. Critics may likely respond negatively due to this hurried execution, which robs the film of the time needed for significant moments to resonate with viewers. I could predict the narrative trajectory and the ending based on its structure, yet the film struggled with continuity, often leaving long gaps without clear connections. Supporting characters, such as the protagonist’s brother, felt underdeveloped and transient. Notably, Kelsey Grammer and Jennifer Grey portray the protagonist’s parents, but their appearances are minimal, leading to missed opportunities for deeper character exploration. The film ultimately presents an emotional drama that falls short of delivering genuine feeling. While it's a decent watch, I would recommend waiting until it's available for free streaming rather than seeking it out in theaters. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/25 Full Review Inconceivable M This movie was atrocious!...Everything about it was so cheesy and at times the "love and caring" made no sense. It was terribly written! It's like it was written for a middle school play and one that was written by the students. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/25 Full Review Jessica R Just saw Wish You Were Here and absolutely Loved it! I laughed and cried- so happy to have a movie like this back in theaters! Helen was the an outstanding character and always had you smiling and wanting more. Cute outfits too! Would definitely recommend and see again Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/25 Full Review Diana F Loved this movie! It’s too bad that more people aren’t going to the theatres. This one is worth it!
