Jeffrey W It may not be Academy award winning material, but for a couple of weeks in July/August of 1957, the crew and cast of "A Boy And His Dog" (later retitled "WOLF DOG") lit up a tiny farming community in central Grey County, Ontario, Canada. Accounts indicate the arrival of the crew and cast struck town folk abuzz, causing them to throng the streets, trying to catch a glimpse of the activity. A handful of locals were fortunate to get into scenes as extras. Ranch scenes were shot in nearby Chatsworth (at the time, Holland) Township and river scenes were shot in Burleigh (near Peterborough). Indoor scenes were shot at Arthur Gottlieb and Gladys Glad's Lakeshore Studios in Mimico, Ontario. The movie made its theatrical rounds, then when the initial rush had worn off, it was finally made available to Markdale folk at an Owen Sound moviehouse in 1961. It impressed my school librarian so much, she told my classmates and I during school hours and it intrigued many of us. Still, the film went missing from mainstream sources and many locals had even lost touch with it. By the early 2000s, there was a revival in interest for the movie and it was eventually found. For a small few, the film remains a focal part of Markdale history, although with the area's many changes, the film has lost much of it's mystical charm in local lore.
