What to Know

Critics Consensus

Deftly directed by star Anna Kendrick, Woman of the Hour uses an incredible true story as the foundation for a powerful examination of the intersection between systemic misogyny and violence.

Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the Hour isn’t shy about putting women front and center, unraveling a true story that, while unevenly paced, unfolds with confident and consistent direction.

Kendrick proves herself a formidable talent on both sides of the camera. The timeline can be choppy, but this is as considered as it is chilling. Go to Full Review

Kendrick’s knack for capturing period detail goes beyond the psychedelic synthetics and kipper ties. She taps into the treacherous sexism that was hardwired into the entertainment industry and wider culture of the time. Go to Full Review

While Kendrick is clearly still finding her footing as a director, there’s more than enough promise here for viewers to be excited to see what comes next. Go to Full Review

Kendrick, along with screenwriter Ian McDonald, does an excellent job of showcasing the sexism and infantilization that women faced in the 1970s. Go to Full Review

Erfan K @erfesh 2d I didn’t expect Woman of the Hour to hit me so hard — it’s not just a thriller, it actually feels disturbingly real. Anna Kendrick does a great job directing and acting: the 1970s vibe, the slow build of tension, and the creepy contrast between charm and danger all work to mess with you. Daniel Zovatto’s character gives off this smooth‑talking energy that becomes chilling when you start to sense what lies beneath. It’s not a fun movie — it’s heavy, unsettling, and definitely not for the faint of heart. But if you’re okay with that and want a film that makes you question appearances and keeps you thinking long after credits, this one’s worth a watch. See more Nov 28 Amazing film. While others say it trivialisd the sufferings of Alcacas victims, I completely disagree, the acting was impeccable and the focus on the game show was, in my opinion to make it more present-day social commentary. However, I do still think that Kendrick can continue to produce better films, i look forward to seeing her future projects. I have already watches this one twice! See more Jonathan K Nov 17 I am not usually one for true crime (to me it's grossly voyeuristic), but this was well done. It is properly intense and comes as a stinging social commentary following on the "Believe women" movement. It's a harrowing retroactive lesson about listening to victims. Anna Kendrick's directing is solid. There are some quite good performances, especially from the runaway teen and, dare I say, from the actor who played the killer so well I kind of hate the actor now. It is a taut, pretty distinctive, crime-thriller drama that manages not to be exploitative or gratuitous with what is shown on screen, despite the genre. See more Maddie O Oct 13 Whilst I want to give Anna Kendricks first attempt at working just as much behind the screen as in front the 5 stars I would love to... I have to admit that there were what felt like gaps in the overall story telling. I loved the combination of true story with developed story lines that further highlight the social and political troubles of the time. It kept me in suspense whilst also providing a strong ability to empathise with the characters and for that I have to commend Anna & her cast highly. See more Lars N Oct 9 Tight, solid entry of the trials and tribulations of the dating scene. See more Chris O @Xtian5 Oct 8 Not bad. Plays a bit fast and loose with the facts for my liking.
