Critics Consensus

Deftly directed by star Anna Kendrick, Woman of the Hour uses an incredible true story as the foundation for a powerful examination of the intersection between systemic misogyny and violence.

Tara Brady Irish Times Kendrick proves herself a formidable talent on both sides of the camera. The timeline can be choppy, but this is as considered as it is chilling. Rated: 4/5 Nov 3, 2024 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Kendrick’s knack for capturing period detail goes beyond the psychedelic synthetics and kipper ties. She taps into the treacherous sexism that was hardwired into the entertainment industry and wider culture of the time. Rated: 4/5 Oct 30, 2024 Full Review Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I think she [Kendrick] has a really good sense of psychology. Oct 24, 2024 Full Review Gisela Savdie El Heraldo The film highlights the misogynistic and sexist dynamic that women face daily. Without being overly explicit, it's a powerful commentary on the manipulation and assault on women because of their gender. [Full review in Spanish] Nov 19, 2024 Full Review Jorge Loser Espinof Scenes work thanks to a very strong direction, which is not common in a debut, the close-ups, framing, and changes of focus enhance the constant psychological tension. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Nov 15, 2024 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Me gusta el cine It ends up being a mesmerising thriller, through which Kendrick demonstrates a keen eye for image composition, blocking, and camera movements. It's a fictionalised true story that ends up feeling depressingly relevant. Full review in Spanish. Rated: 4/5 Nov 15, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Waniya S Watching this movie as a woman made me uncomfortable and creeped out. It was so realistic and scary. Then in the end of teh movie it said based on true events and I was like Oops well... I think everyone should watch this, it's ughhh i don't even know how to describe it. It's a feeling. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review The S This was a very compelling story that was put together as a script very poorly. So the woman on the dating game show had no real relevance to the story even though her story is told almost as in detail as the killer’s story was. And ps: if a script is well done, it shouldn’t need a post script at the end of the movie. Tell the story, develop the character, focus on the main narrative. This jumps around, is poorly edited and arranged and the story is seriously compromised as a result. Honestly has the feel of a Lifetime movie..thrown together quickly just to create content and Netflix originals are almost always like that these days. Very low quality, obviously produced and turned around quickly without much in the way of talent or vision in order for Netflix to claim they have more “original” content this week. Skip it. I haven’t seen a Netflix original in 5 years that I’d recommend but this one is particularly bad. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Brad C She's good, and he's great, but the movie is REALLY disjointed and it's never completely clear where it's going or what it's trying to accomplish. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review David F A well-acted film about a young woman who appears on a dating game show and has a brush with a serial killer. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Kristina C I love true stories, have to see if you like true stories too. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Audience Member Alcala was a horrible person. This movie fails to explore just how evil he was. Kendrick, who plays Bradshaw, is an arrogant, misandric, miserable human being and Kendrick capitalizes on the current cultural narrative of man hating, self deluded females feeling like they’re victims of everything. She ignores that he victimized boys and men because that would ruin her social justice cred. She hits on every trope that women should be believed without evidence, and that all men are evil and stupid. So what you get is the typical man hating garbage instead of a movie exploring the depth of evil of a serial killer. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews
