What to Know

Critics Consensus

Deftly directed by star Anna Kendrick, Woman of the Hour uses an incredible true story as the foundation for a powerful examination of the intersection between systemic misogyny and violence.

Tara Brady Irish Times Kendrick proves herself a formidable talent on both sides of the camera. The timeline can be choppy, but this is as considered as it is chilling. Rated: 4/5 Nov 3, 2024 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Kendrick’s knack for capturing period detail goes beyond the psychedelic synthetics and kipper ties. She taps into the treacherous sexism that was hardwired into the entertainment industry and wider culture of the time. Rated: 4/5 Oct 30, 2024 Full Review Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I think she [Kendrick] has a really good sense of psychology. Oct 24, 2024 Full Review Loren King Newport This Week (RI) Kendrick deftly juggles timeline and tonal shifts to create a subversive crime thriller, with expected scares and unexpected empathy and humanity. Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Dan Buffa Ramble On With Buffa (Substack) Kendrick gives a credible and relatively low key performance as the woman in question who knows too little to go on a date with Rodney. One of her best gifts as an actress is being believable without having to overplay a role. Dec 29, 2024 Full Review Joe Lipsett Murder Made Fiction Podcast - Bloody Disgusting Kendrick's directorial debut is assured and, in one incredibly evocative scene, harrowing. The split narrative distracts slightly from the story, but the film feels timely Zovatto is appropriately menacing. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 24, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Rose W The amazing acting and intertwining story's within this film evoke genuine empathy and concern as you witness the harsh realities that many were subject to in the 1970s-1980s. The storyline is easy to follow while also being fascinating, as you root for the survival of the victims. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review Reese L After her good career as an actress in excellent films, Anna Kendrick raises her level by making her debut as a director in a terrifying true story that was a complete surprise, combining many elements that work perfectly, making her directing style catch the attention of the public in their next behind-the-scenes projects. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Will B Film about a Hollywood dating game, which turns vile with a serial killer. A sad true story. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/18/25 Full Review Mark B It is hard to say the movie is bad it is not but I found The Dating Game aspect of the story disjointed and distracting. It interrupted the flow of the story and took more away from the movie then it added. I guess this choice was a directing issue that did not work for me. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Abbey R I like Kendrick. She's personable, charming and talented but she is wasted here. It's her first attempt at directing and it shows but given the material she's given to work with, that must be forgiven. The project is also saddled with terrible secondary characters, whose "acting" abilities cannot all be blamed on a poor script. The hitchhiker is the one exception though and she is another one who is far too good for the scraps she's been thrown. And kudos on whoever cast the creepy serial killer who oozes evil repulsion. You hated him from first glance. All in all, another disappointment from Netflix who seems to be in some sort of weird purgatory where they are just putting out garbage that gets eyes simply because it's new. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Dave P Maybe some people didn’t like the content? Otherwise I don’t understand any reason to give it a low score. Fantastic movie. Flew by. Suspenseful, well paced and great character development. Based on a true story, but still manages to keep you guessing until the end. That’s an achievement. For her directorial debut, Anna Kendrick did an amazing job. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
