College graduate Molly (Louise Smith), trying to bankroll her own business, works as a high-priced New York City escort. As a lesbian, she's able to keep her emotional distance from the clients, who range from cynically exploitative to desperately needy. But her open ambition to rise above her current station rubs many of her coworkers the wrong way, especially the combative, street-smart Dawn (Amanda Goodwin) and the escort service's disdainful madam, Lucy (Ellen McElduff).

Derek Malcolm Guardian This is on the whole a worthy successor to the lively if indisciplined Born in Flames. It packs in a lot of information, it doesn't preach and it leaves you in no doubt where its sympathies lie. Mar 14, 2023 Full Review Victoria Mather Daily Telegraph (UK) It is a shred, funny film which Borden handles with wit and imagination. Mar 14, 2023 Full Review Jay Scott Globe and Mail Working Girls is provocative, honest, and disturbing. Dec 7, 2022 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com "Working Girls" could easily be adapted to be a modernday Broadway play. It would be a sensation for its timeless qualities of social, sexual, and economic truth. Rated: FIVE STARS Jun 16, 2024 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) Still feels so revolutionary today. Feb 12, 2024 Full Review Brian Susbielles InSession Film Borden’s feminist underground film, a story of an “economic choice,” is not a documentary as some would call it, but a narrative on women being independent and proud of their livelihood. James W Credible depiction of working girls in 1986. Unlike so many films about prostitution it isn't pornographic, or ridiculous or tragic. Most of the film takes place in the apartment where the women work on one day. Some johns are stereotypical but there are enough to include a realistic variety of types. Louise Smith as Molly carries the film and is intelligent, well-spoken and attractive. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/05/23 Full Review robert p How this got to be a Criterion movie is beyond me. I do not want to waste my time on Lesbians who comprise alot of working girls! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
