Vincent Canby New York Times An almost magical example of how an artist of genius can take someone else's classic work and shape it to fit his own temperament without really violating it. Rated: 4.5/5 Dec 6, 2004 Full Review Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader Buuel's low-budget melodrama has a certain gothic ferocity that's missing in the other versions; the results are mixed, but seldom unworthy of the master. Aug 24, 2002 Full Review Ed Gonzalez Slant Magazine The film's dreary exteriors (the trees without leaves, the buzzards on constant alert) evoke a landscape of spiritual unrest. Rated: 3/4 Aug 23, 2002 Full Review Michael Bronski Gay Community News (Boston) Wuthering Heights is camp because it takes what we are used to and transforms it, makes it into something even better than what we had imagined. Sep 13, 2022 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Gains a power the other screen versions don't have through its unrelenting gothic ruthlessness. william k Wonderfully photographed and directed, this adaptation of the classic novel goes straight to the overheated passions and never lets loose; generally, a mainstream production with occasional Buñuel touches sprinkled in. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Despite its weak performances (especially by Irasema Dilián) and the sad fact that this, like other adaptations of Brontë's novel, is only a partial retelling of the story, the Gothic atmosphere is unrelenting and Buñuel seems to capture the soul of the original narrative. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Un genere che sicuramente non mi si addice, datato, con un bunuel sprecato. L'opera migliore dell'esilio messicano rimane Los Olivados. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review george p Passionate version of the Bronte classic. Exciting throughout. Great cast. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Bunuel's Mexican retelling of Wuthering Heights checks in as a minor work. The gothic atmosphere is rich with low key lighting and chiaroscuro to spare. The characters are incredibly heated up, everyone is glowering, sobbing, wishing death upon themselves or their enemies. Only a few characteristic Bunuel touches show up (butterflies and spiders, primarily) but the finale in the crypt is classic. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews
