Led by a triumvirate of terrific performances, Alfonso Cuarón's free-spirited road trip through Mexico is a sexy and wistful hymn to the fleetingness of youth.

Shioka O A coming of age road trip film. I think it's a success because it's Mexican, more passionated and more sentimental. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review elana k While it may be as sexy as anything you will may seen for the longest time- it is the brilliant performances, youthful sense of adventure and emotional depth, in which the sexy-ness occurs, that makes "Y tu madre tambien" such a stand-out film. The sex is a factor, but it is not the X-factor. My favourite road-trip film, ever. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Johnathon W First rate erotic drama thanks to a superb cast and Alfonso Carol's unflinching direction. The actors are excellent, with both Gael Garcia Bernal & Diego Luna making star making turns. However, it is Maribel Verdu who owns the film as the older woman who commands them both. Behind the camera, Cuaron gives an unflinching look at young love and romance, showing how naive you can be at a young age while contrasting with the jadedness of being older. A great, erotic film all-around and unique from beginning to end. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/23 Full Review Clinton B An intimate portrait and love letter everyday life and the environment of México. Through the lens of a vocal diary, the journey of the coming of age for these characters let's you experience the true face and beauty of the country. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/05/23 Full Review Shock Therapy R Absolutely meaningless. Come-of-age camouflage for promiscuity. I guess all that two boys need is someone's mother as the best physical education teacher in life. One must gather that she was teaching everything that she wasn't and hadn't experienced during her own adult life—or maybe reflective of it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/18/23 Full Review Thomas M The best international movie ever made! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/26/22 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Jami Bernard New York Daily News Although the pace is buoyantly charming, Cuarón -- and his screenwriter brother, Carlos Cuarón -- never let the viewer forget that life and death go on outside the car windows. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 9, 2023 Full Review Joe Williams St. Louis Post-Dispatch [Gael García Bernal] is especially vivid... We suspect that soon he will be offered roles in American films. But this scintillating film makes a compelling argument that there's a paradise waiting for those who keep traveling south. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 9, 2023 Full Review Bill Muller Arizona Republic Criticizing this movie for having too much sex is to miss the point. People will either accept the scenes or not, but Y tu mamá también suffers from a far worse affliction: There's not a single likeable character in the movie. Rated: 2/4 Sep 9, 2023 Full Review Jeff Simon Buffalo News Its tone is absolutely unique -- by turns obnoxious, erotic, funny, world-weary and sad. Sometimes it manages to be all those things at once. Rated: 4/4 Sep 9, 2023 Full Review Gary Chun Honolulu Star-Bulletin What could've been a pretentious cinematic treatise on sex and politics in Mexico is instead an astute and genuine film. Give credit to Cuarón's screenplay, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, and especially a trio of excellent lead actors. Rated: 4/4 Sep 9, 2023 Full Review Dennis King Tulsa World [Alfonso Cuarón] has here crafted a wonderfully precise and observant picture that feels as utterly natural and off-handed as a roguish reminiscence between life-long friends.
