Audience Member (Español / English) English Abstract This first film accompanies Lila (Hafsia Herzi is the protagonist and also its director) in her uncertain duel of a love that she finds it difficult to give up, but without closing in on herself and exploring the possibility of other ties. The film exudes simplicity and naturalness, presents well-defined characters with few strokes and flows with dialogues as fresh as they are eloquent that bring it closer to Rohmer's cinema. English Review You Deserve a Lover begins with a tense discussion between Lila (Hafsia Herzi) and Rémi (Jerémié Laheurte), her boyfriend, who had distanced himself from her to think about the future of the relationship, a relationship that will suffer an uncertain fate. In her debut feature, the director Hafsia Herzi will accompany Lila in this uncertain duel of a love that she finds it difficult to give up, in her attempt to distance herself from a clearly manipulative and narcissistic boyfriend. With the support of some friends, however, she does not close in on herself and begins to explore the possibility of other ties. The film exudes simplicity and naturalness, presents well-defined characters with few strokes and flows with dialogues as fresh as they are eloquent, making it clear that the duel is often not a linear process. I dare to assure that its theme, its fluidity and its dynamics inscribe the film, inscribe this film in the tradition of the cinema of Eric Rohmer and his heroines. Jay Weissberg Variety It's tedious watching Lila's pouting irrationality without any sense of why this woman is catnip apart from her physical attractions. Jun 2, 2019 Full Review Deborah Young Hollywood Reporter The camera's ironic eye on... dissatisfying mini-relationships is sometimes touching, sometimes funny, sometimes a little irritating. But overall, the takeaway is warmly human. May 20, 2019 Full Review Jonathan Romney Screen International Herzi proves extremely good at getting relaxed, spontaneous performances from her cast, and from herself. May 20, 2019 Full Review Kaleem Aftab Cineuropa The aesthetic of the film and the sense of intimacy it creates are also straight out of the Kechiche playbook, and that's high praise indeed for anyone making inroads into directing.
