Ren Scateni Vague Visages It’s impressive how Kim Hyang-gi comfortably masters her character’s emotional burden by delivering a thoroughly convincing performance that carries the entire film. At the same time, Cha proves to be a gifted director and screenwriter. Sep 21, 2023 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis HanCinema "Young-ju" is hyperbolic and unrealistic, but at the same time captivating and entertaining, as it returns the melodrama to its original roots. Jul 26, 2020 Full Review William Schwartz HanCinema All throughout Young-joo has ran into people who boast of how correct they are or were. But caring about being right, as it turns out, is no guarantee of moral scruples. Audience Member Kim Hyang Gi's (the actress who plays the lead ‘Young Ju') performance was absolutely flawless. She was a perfect fit in portraying this character, with a level of purity and innocence that can't be reached by many her age. The film is on the slower and darker side of the korean movie realm but that's to be expected of the genre. ** SPOILER ** The only reason I can't rate it higher is the lack of empathy from the other characters, particularly her brother, and her aunt. I've seen many characters like her aunt in korean movies and dramas and so I expected her character more, but her brother was a different story. Even if others can't understand, surely her brother should help her out more. He was a frustrating character in the midst of many other frustrating characters in a depressing movie that ended with very little hope for the protagonist. Would I have enjoyed it as much had the lead not been such a great actress ?? Absolutely not Should you give it a try? Yes, but not as a Friday night with friends movie .. it's more a Sunday night in bed with your pet curled in your lap type of movie. Enjoy (: Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
