Kate Stables Sight & Sound Though the dialogue is mostly improvised, it feels rooted in the relationships as well as pleasingly spontaneous. Jul 31, 2018 Full Review Chase Whale Film.com It's comforting to watching dramatic and comic fiction regarding the things some of us actually have to deal with in life. When done right, those kinds of films are worth your time. YOUR SISTER'S SISTER happens to be one of them. Nov 8, 2013 Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle Movies that start well and end badly occur often enough, and yet even knowing that is no preparation for what happens to Your Sister's Sister. Rated: 2/4 Jan 8, 2013 Full Review Katie Smith-Wong Musings of Guitargalchina A little too quiet and slow in places, Your Sister's Sister is warm and touching with three great lead performances. Rated: 3/5 Dec 10, 2019 Full Review Brian D. Johnson Maclean's Magazine It's a movie that's all relationships all the time. The story is scripted but the dialogue is improvised, as a chamber piece performed by just three actors-a tiny-perfect triangle of emotional intrigue. Jul 31, 2019 Full Review Ivan Radford CineVue With its trio of pitch-perfect performances, this is probably the best threesome you'll see all year. Yuri B This was brilliant... Mark Duplass is criminally underrated as an actor... & he, Dewitt & Emily Blunt's characters were all so damaged & endearing, it simply drew you in. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Diana K I enjoyed this low key movie. Mark Duplass was excellent. The scenery was beautiful too. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/12/24 Full Review KB B This was such an enjoyable movie with a great storyline and acting. The three main characters were excellent together. I gave 3 stars because of the lame non-ending. I hate it when they leave you hanging. I would have given 4-4.5 stars if the ending was resolved. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/24 Full Review Steve D So inept and unpleasant the cast doesn't matter. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Thoroughly engaging and entertaining indie - just three great actors with palpable chemistry, unique atmospheric location, and a solid script. Funny and moving - just what this kind of movies are supposed to be! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie has a phenomenal one sentence pitch: A man grieving the loss of his brother is told by his best friend/ex of his deceased brother to take a trip to her family cabin, where he meets her older lesbian sister, sleeps with her, and realizes he and his best friend are actually in love. Watching this movie, I felt that not much was happening, and if you can summarize up most of the plot in one sentence, I guess not much did. But having some experience with a mumblecore movies and Mark Duplass as an actor, I had expected there to be fewer 180s in character development and plot moves. As the plot progresses, you start to empathize with each person in really surprising ways because you learn more about them. You figure the characters out in real time just how you do in real life. Lynn Shelton has such a grasp on human relationships, and you can tell from the authentic ways Duplass and Blunt deliver their lines. They are so spot on. They say everything you want them to say to each other in the most cathartic way possible. When Mark speaks to Blunt in the cabin after she finds out about her sister, he cuts straight through this tight little knot of conflict and speaks to the heart of the matter. "I slept with your sister, and you slept with my brother, and I cannot be with you". You never consider the fact that she used to date his brother, because they are so close to begin with. It's amazing. Besides that, I've never really sought out sister movies, so I can't speak to this movie in the greater cannon of sister movies, but Blunt's adult relationship with her older sister is something I haven't seen before, and adored. Maybe their quiet moments together, whispering half-asleep under the covers, talking about love are unrealistic. I can't know. But I'm going to look out for sister movies in the future.
