Critics Consensus

The brilliantly well-rounded Zootopia offers a thoughtful, inclusive message that's as rich and timely as its sumptuously state-of-the-art animation -- all while remaining fast and funny enough to keep younger viewers entertained.

Victoria Luxford BBC.com “A well thought out and very witty movie… one for the whole family to enjoy” Rated: 4/5 May 16, 2022 Full Review Kristy Puchko Pajiba Sure to speak to kids and grown-ups alike, Zooptopia unfolds a poignant lesson about how prejudice can hurt people, but also how it can be overcome. And it does all this in a wonderfully fun film. Dec 30, 2016 Full Review Stephanie Zacharek TIME Magazine There are enough under-the-radar subtleties, rendered with a refreshing lack of smart-aleckiness, to make Zootopia feel current and fresh. It's a modest, unassuming entertainment that's motored by a sly sensibility. Dec 30, 2016 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine This is the weird sort of film that is, on its own merits, perfectly well produced and entertaining, yet winds up being a slight disappointment because it feels as if it should have been somewhat better than it is. Caleb B Even 8 years since this came out I love this movie so much. A truly witty and creative movie that keeps you engaged the whole time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review G.D. 0 It doesn't age wel. It is boring and predictable. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review Shaked G Specially it was a good movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review Jopa Z intelligent, mature and funny, with a hint of darkness, making this film one of the best animations. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Jay W "Zootopia" is a very fun movie. The movie has something for everyone, whether they like the police action, the animal characters, the hardworking main character or the comedic paring of the two leads. I would have likely loved this film as a kid, I loved police stuff and this film has a lot of good police/detective material for those kids. This film has a lot of good stuff, it just loses steam as it comes to its final act. "Zootopia" had three different directors, that may contribute to why the film feels very disjointed. Behind the scenes there are a lot of deleted scenes and scrapped ideas, including disagreements on who the main character was going to be. These disfunctions are well hidden for the most part, until the final 30 minutes. The movie suffers from tonal whiplash as they transition from one plot point to the other. Still a good time, the film just gets a heavy handed with their commentary towards the end. It isn't a bad message, just a message we have already heard, and this doesn't bring much new to the conversation. I don't mean to dog on this movie too much. Maybe I'm just too bullheaded. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Clayton D Zootopia offers clever humour and an insightful story for the whole family to enjoy Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
