Critics Consensus

The brilliantly well-rounded Zootopia offers a thoughtful, inclusive message that's as rich and timely as its sumptuously state-of-the-art animation -- all while remaining fast and funny enough to keep younger viewers entertained.

Victoria Luxford BBC.com “A well thought out and very witty movie… one for the whole family to enjoy” Rated: 4/5 May 16, 2022 Full Review Kristy Puchko Pajiba Sure to speak to kids and grown-ups alike, Zooptopia unfolds a poignant lesson about how prejudice can hurt people, but also how it can be overcome. And it does all this in a wonderfully fun film. Dec 30, 2016 Full Review Stephanie Zacharek TIME Magazine There are enough under-the-radar subtleties, rendered with a refreshing lack of smart-aleckiness, to make Zootopia feel current and fresh. It's a modest, unassuming entertainment that's motored by a sly sensibility. Dec 30, 2016 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The beauty of the film is that one can be unaware of the subtext and still reap the benefits of an imaginatively designed endeavor packed with huge laughs. Rated: 3.5/4 Nov 16, 2025 Full Review Rolando Gallego EscribiendoCine ...Zootopia is presented as a utopia of animals who have renounced their instincts, but it soon exposes the reasoning of any metropolis plagued by bureaucracy, scams, and everyday misery. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 7/10 Sep 29, 2025 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine This is the weird sort of film that is, on its own merits, perfectly well produced and entertaining, yet winds up being a slight disappointment because it feels as if it should have been somewhat better than it is. FLICKSWITH M Aside from an underwhelming twist villain, Zootopia stands out amongst a bunch of Disney’s Revival Era films as one that goes as far to tackle it’s racial discriminatory issues in the middle of an engaging buddy-cop adventure in the form of anthropomorphic animals in a Zoo-like utopia led by two charming leads with electric chemistry. The characters were charming and well-developed, each bringing a unique personality to the story. The humor was clever and appealing to a broad audience, and the film successfully conveyed important messages about tolerance, stereotypes, and perseverance. These elements combined to make Zootopia an engaging, thoughtful, and entertaining movie, even with the predictability of its villain twist. -flickswithmigs Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/25 Full Review Caleb S. I like this movie. It’s very feel good, but I also feel like it was a little dramatic, especially with the primary dilemma. I know the point of the movie is to not be prejudiced against different groups, but the main characters are a little too dramatic about it. Of course, this movie is for kids, but still, there are ways it could improve. Watching it a second time made me realize it isn’t quite as funny as I remember. I’m excited to compare this to the second movie, which is coming out this weekend. This movie is definitely enjoyable though. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/26/25 Full Review j-dizzle T. Hilarious film with a well thought out message and great comedy bits that will be a classic for years to come Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/26/25 Full Review love H. Amazing Disney movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/26/25 Full Review Samuel G I saw Zootopia 1 numerous times and 3 days ago, my sister and I saw parts of Zootopia 1, but then my father came and told me it's time to go to sleep. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/26/25 Full Review Kayleigh S I love and appreciate this movie. I especially love the message of it. I look forward to Zootopia 2.
