Dec 11, 2024 Full Review Ben Travers IndieWire Now he’s at it again with Creature Commandos, and while the third time isn’t exactly the charm, its easy-going, character-first approach to another story about incarcerated criminals thrust together to save the world largely works to its advantage. Dec 6, 2024 Full Review Victor Stiff That Shelf While its scale and scope make for a modest intro to the new DCU, Creature Commandos still delivers a devilishly entertaining first impression. Mar 4, 2025 Full Review Jonathan Garcia Dynamic Duel Podcast Though highly mature and violent, DC Studios’ initial foray packs fun action spectacle and dire stakes while conveying that behind every monster is a tragedy. DREW Good humour, action, and incredible music choices. Must watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/05/25 Full Review Lawrence H. James Gunn’s Creature Commandos marks the official launch of the DCU’s “Gods and Monsters” era, and halfway through the season, it’s proving to be both weird and wonderful. The show embraces Gunn’s signature blend of dark humor, heart, and violent absurdity, while introducing audiences to an ensemble of bizarre antiheroes—Rick Flag Sr., Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus, the Bride of Frankenstein, G.I. Robot, and, of course, Weasel. Each episode so far has balanced character-driven storytelling with chaotic missions that feel straight out of a comic panel. The animation quality is impressive—fluid, cinematic, and rich in atmosphere. The tone walks a clever line between horror and satire, and while it’s undeniably violent, the emotional beats (especially between Bride and Rick Flag Sr.) give the story surprising depth. Still, pacing issues linger. Some episodes spend a bit too much time on setup, and a few characters (like Dr. Phosphorus and G.I. Robot) haven’t had as much spotlight as fans might hope. However, the world-building hints at bigger connections to the live-action DCU, keeping excitement high. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/19/25 Full Review edward c If your a fan of DC or James gunn this is a must watch! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/18/25 Full Review Jacob B It's not as good as some of James Gunn's past superhero adventures, an issue not helped by this season's brevity nor by some questionable choices in the season finale, but for fans of his style, Creature Commandos still has enough action, humour, heart, good choice of relatively obscure music and fleshed-out characters to make this Halloween-themed Suicide Squad worth watching. I do think this works better if you see it as a glorified sneak peek at what James Gunn's take on a DC Cinematic Universe will be like. It's there if you want to watch it but, for the time being, it's not strictly necessary seeing how it doesn't have the burden of carrying a franchise the then-upcoming Superman did. Just keep in mind that The Suicide Squad and the first season of Peacemaker are still broad strokes canon in the Gunn-verse. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/16/25 Full Review Janusz C Typical James Gunn take on DC universe. Tries to be edgy and funny, ends up cringe. What surprises is James self-insert into this series. Really? That's new low that I haven't seen since Velma. Story tries to tell background story for each character. Well, for monsters anyway. We don't see any background for General Gunn the Yellow. All painfully predictable, main plot included. 4/10, not even average despite of probably considerate budget. Save your time, go watch Invincible instead.
