What to Know

Critics Consensus

Dark Matter's intriguing ideas are spread a tad thin over its season-long runtime, but fans of foreboding sci-fi will find its residue addictively sticky.

Tom Ryan The Age (Australia) 08/15/2024
The TV equivalent of a wild roller coaster ride with a family drama as its emotional hook. And it’s difficult not to be swept along by it. Go to Full Review

Not as ambitious as Foundation, nor as brain-taxing as Constellation, this 'what if?' series hits the spot nonetheless, maintaining Apple's status as the default home of thoughtful, adult-orientated sci-fi. Go to Full Review

This sci-fi thriller has its missteps, but powerful leading actors give it depth and resonance. Go to Full Review

Dark Matter is an ambitious and absorbing addition to Apple TV+’s catalogue, though it occasionally falls into repetition. A recommended series with an enigmatic take on life’s ‘what ifs.’ [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

While the series opens with an interesting premise, it gets lost in excess. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

nowhere near as smart or as subversive as Crouch appears to think it is, but it is pulpy watchable entertainment even if it makes you want to read the novel for hopefully something with a little more bite Go to Full Review

Anil R @Smile04119 5d Not a bad show. Far better than severance, but still not really anything special. See more Rob E Aug 14 The writing twists and turns in this are unforeseeable and compelling. Perfectly acted by Edgerton, Connelly, Braga, Simpson, Brugel, etc. Simpson's best work so far (which is saying a lot, considering "Zodiac"), playing two different characters of the same person from different universes - same for Brugel (who was excellent in "Handmaid's Tale"). This series begs not only for a sequel, but also for spinoff about main characters exploring other parallel universes. The special effects were phenomenal WITHOUT being gratuitous or gaudy. The emotions stemming from the storyline were way beyond compelling and gripping: always making it easy to imagine yourself inside the characters' minds. So supremely well-crafted writing and directing. See more Maria S Jul 23 Really loved the beginning and the idea itself, and completely disappointed with the ending of season 1. See more Saugat B. @SaugatB Jul 21 An enjoyable ride, I was engrossed because of the fact that I had read the book. Don't think it would be as captivating for someone new! See more Peter K Jul 12 I get that broadening the story by allowing it to develop through multiple characters could be beneficial, but in this case, it made the story a yawn. The last episode lacked the “I-can’t-read-fast-enough-to-see-how-this-ends” nail-biting intensity. Maybe for those who didn’t know the story, it worked. It was just lukewarm for me. However, I wonder what the completely new material in season 2 could bring. See more Read all reviews
