Critics Consensus

Dark Matter's intriguing ideas are spread a tad thin over its season-long runtime, but fans of foreboding sci-fi will find its residue addictively sticky.

Tom Ryan The Age (Australia) 08/15/2024
The TV equivalent of a wild roller coaster ride with a family drama as its emotional hook. And it’s difficult not to be swept along by it. Go to Full Review

Not as ambitious as Foundation, nor as brain-taxing as Constellation, this 'what if?' series hits the spot nonetheless, maintaining Apple's status as the default home of thoughtful, adult-orientated sci-fi. Go to Full Review
Gregory Wakeman Chicago Reader 05/16/2024
This sci-fi thriller has its missteps, but powerful leading actors give it depth and resonance. Go to Full Review

Dark Matter is an ambitious and absorbing addition to Apple TV+’s catalogue, though it occasionally falls into repetition. A recommended series with an enigmatic take on life’s ‘what ifs.’ [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

While the series opens with an interesting premise, it gets lost in excess. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

nowhere near as smart or as subversive as Crouch appears to think it is, but it is pulpy watchable entertainment even if it makes you want to read the novel for hopefully something with a little more bite Go to Full Review

John B @RT30266910 21h I'm usually skeptic about TV series and movies based on novels as they rarely live up to the print version, but this show is elite, maybe even better than the book. It doesn't hurt that Blake Crouch is behind it all, making sure it's true to his original story and even going beyond the written word. This is as good as it gets. See more Jessica B @RT66253704 3d Non stop action and so intriguing you can’t stop watching. So excited for season 2! See more David L @RT07050715 3d As with nearly ALL AppleTV series, this one dilutes (and bloats) whatever story there may be is by paddind it with melodramatic filler that it becomes tedious and a bore. This critique also includes SILO, StarCity, For All Mankind. and Severence. All great concepts but after 1 or 2 episodes they barely rise above ho-hum. At least Severence made it to season 2 before it fizzled out. Padded with filler is the operative phrase in all cases. I mean the more episodes the better, right? See more Doberman U @Priapus 3d A mini-serie that give you no time to breath! One of my all time favourite sci-fy show with The Expanse and Altered Carbon See more Simon R @RT64486026 Sep 1 What a slog. S l o o o w. Plus, I didn't care about the characters. See more Phil C @EliotKane Aug 31 Season 1 was phenomenal and so glad another season got picked up See more Read all reviews
