What to Know

Critics Consensus

Dark Matter's intriguing ideas are spread a tad thin over its season-long runtime, but fans of foreboding sci-fi will find its residue addictively sticky.

Tom Ryan The Age (Australia) The TV equivalent of a wild roller coaster ride with a family drama as its emotional hook. And it’s difficult not to be swept along by it. Aug 15, 2024 Full Review James Dyer Empire Magazine Not as ambitious as Foundation, nor as brain-taxing as Constellation, this 'what if?' series hits the spot nonetheless, maintaining Apple's status as the default home of thoughtful, adult-orientated sci-fi. Rated: 3/5 May 23, 2024 Full Review Gregory Wakeman Chicago Reader This sci-fi thriller has its missteps, but powerful leading actors give it depth and resonance. May 16, 2024 Full Review Ricardo De Querol El Pais (Spain) While the series opens with an interesting premise, it gets lost in excess. [Full review in Spanish] Jan 23, 2025 Full Review Connor Lightbody Loud and Clear Reviews nowhere near as smart or as subversive as Crouch appears to think it is, but it is pulpy watchable entertainment even if it makes you want to read the novel for hopefully something with a little more bite Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 4, 2024 Full Review Archi Sengupta LeisureByte.com Although some of its runtime might be quite dense, there are moments in this sci-fi series that leaves you at the edge of your seat. Audience Member Highly entertaining for what it is. I would recommend it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review Jeff M This might seem like a grumpy old man complaint, but I find series where scene after scene is shot in semi-darkness to be really tedious. There is one scene where the lights are turned on and it's still too dark to see properly, and several scenes where it took me too long to work out what I was looking at. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/01/25 Full Review Jon B Solid show. All the key elements are here for a great show. Enjoyed it. A little strong with language (and sometimes poorly used, as in "it doesn't fit"). I don't know why shows do this. Some people complain (like me) when unnecessary F-words are peppered throughout. But here's the thing - NOBODY complains when bad language is light, or used more appropriately. Why not please more people? But there isn't any sex and the violence is low. I recommend it if you like sci-fi. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review P M The multiverse concept is overdone, yet this show manages to provide a fresh take. Great writing and very fun. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review Aa K This is one of the best shows on tv, and I don't understand why everyone isn't talking about it. Such beautiful storytelling and truly stunning acting. May this show run for all the seasons - I can't wait to find out what happens next. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review David K The premise of this show has SO MUCH potential. But the writing is quite simply quizzically incongruent. Any successful story of the genre must combine technology and characters, and for way too long science-fiction has lacked the human connection in the latter, but now there is a tendancy for writers to overcompensate. This is yet another case where for some reason implausible melodrama is introduced to try to patch a hole in the sci-fi composition. Any nerd can work out what is going on. Yet this professor, who has thought about multiverses for decades, does not consider the possibility? Get real. The entireity of the first two episodes could/should have been the first 20mins. Dude shouldn't be looking for Jennifer Connelly, should be looking for Jerry O'Connell. IYKYK. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/29/25 Full Review Read all reviews
