What to Know

Critics Consensus

Dark Matter's intriguing ideas are spread a tad thin over its season-long runtime, but fans of foreboding sci-fi will find its residue addictively sticky.

Tom Ryan The Age (Australia) 08/15/2024
The TV equivalent of a wild roller coaster ride with a family drama as its emotional hook. And it’s difficult not to be swept along by it. Go to Full Review

Not as ambitious as Foundation, nor as brain-taxing as Constellation, this 'what if?' series hits the spot nonetheless, maintaining Apple's status as the default home of thoughtful, adult-orientated sci-fi. Go to Full Review
Gregory Wakeman Chicago Reader 05/16/2024
This sci-fi thriller has its missteps, but powerful leading actors give it depth and resonance. Go to Full Review

Dark Matter is an ambitious and absorbing addition to Apple TV+’s catalogue, though it occasionally falls into repetition. A recommended series with an enigmatic take on life’s ‘what ifs.’ [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

While the series opens with an interesting premise, it gets lost in excess. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

nowhere near as smart or as subversive as Crouch appears to think it is, but it is pulpy watchable entertainment even if it makes you want to read the novel for hopefully something with a little more bite Go to Full Review

Ryan A. @antcliff Feb 21 Normally don’t watch these types of shows, grabbed my attention all the way until the season ending. See more Michael B. @MichaelB00T Feb 20 One of my favorites, keeps you hooked and constantly asking questions, 10/10 See more Saskia M @Ninti Feb 2 Worked my way through the not interesting alternative realities, hoping to become invested in the characters, only for it to climax in chaotic not logical series of events. Stupid. Dumb. Ridiculous. Completely lost me at.the last.episode of.season 1. Could barely watch. Whole lot.of useless aggression. Couldn't even enjoy Daniela and Jason reuniting. See more John R @LostPlot Jan 28 I gave up on Episode 5 The premise is very interesting, Its well acted, it just does not go anywhere! I honestly tried, and really wanted to like this. but I cant sink anymore of my time into it, a real shame really. See more Angelika B @Horizonless Jan 27 It was a great idea to adapt this to a series. The book fell short for me, but the series was able to expound the ideas and the emotions more. I'm so glad Blake Crouch had a hand in writing this for tv. Most of the foundations from book to series were the same, but the changes to explore character depth of not only our lead but also the side characters was very much welcome. I didn't really like the book ending since it felt so rushed and flat, but the series gave justice to it for me. Loved it! See more Ryan G @RustyRye Jan 21 Cool premise and well executed. The finale was a bit of a mess. Introducing a plot point that played no role in the entirety of the season except the final episode made no sense. This multiplicity issue could have happened all throughout the season but did not. The science of the show isn't all that accurate anyway but if you are going to create rules you should stick to them. Attempting to subvert the plot point so late pulls you out of the show and you can't enjoy the finale. Outside of that issue I thought the show was fairly well done. Some cringey characters and dialog don't drag the show down too much as the main characters help move the plot forward at a decent pace. Worth a watch if you are a sci-fi fan. Just lower your expectations for the finale and try not to roll your eyes too hard at the utopia world. See more Read all reviews
