'Dear Child', which recently dropped onto Netflix, is based on the German novel of the same name. SYNOPSIS: 'A mysterious woman's escape from her harrowing captivity points investigators toward the dark truth behind an unsolved disappearance 13 years earlier.' Overall there's nothing new here with the story using elements reminiscent of other material like 'Gone Girl' and others. However, this is an exceptional piece of TV. It's unexpected twists make this series an engrossing experience with a real sense of menace and suspense throughout. 'Dear Child' is like watching a complicated puzzle that slowly completes and answers itself in front of you right up to its finale. That finale is a bit underwhelming considering what has gone on before, but perfection is hard to create. An intense psychology thriller! 8/10

With all due respect to the creators (and partly because of the atrocious dubbing), while the premise is excellent, everything else is just terrible: the writing is awful, the characters are idiotic and their behaviour is full of the cheapest and the most absurd cliches you’ve seen in B-movies and the dialogue is just absurd. The whole things is too long because it’s just BADLY written. Don’t waste your time.

Thoroughly engaging, suspenseful and thrilling, this is a beautifully crafted, bingeworthy story. By the end of the first episode you are hooked! It has you asking questions from start to finish, and not all of them are answered. There are some moments that make the eyes roll, but you forget them by the next scene. The protagonists' background and psychological state should have been explored a lot more, as they would have made the story end more completely than it does.

Absolutely first rate across the board. Killer suspense, great acting and characters, not a moment wasted, and deeply touching at the end. Virtually perfect. I lost sleep while watching and I'm sure I will after because I'll be thinking about it. There are worse forms of insomnia.

Overall, a good, entertaining watch and (if you don't know the novel) some really good and unexpected twists and turns. The actors did a great job, all around. Kim Riedle in the role of Jasmin Grass stood out to me for how well she portrayed the trauma, pain, confusion, and anxiety of her role. I also appreciated the authentic and natural-looking actors chosen for all of the roles. Cons: The way this show interacts with its source material feels somewhat hit-and-miss at times. For contexts, I enjoyed the original novel very much, in particular its constant twists and turns. The show starts off almost indistinguishable from the plot of the novel. At least the first episode is very close to the novel - which sometimes feels a bit awkward due to the very nature of the different mediums. Many choices, conflicts, dialogues, and thought-processes of the characters that make sense in the novel are either altered or shortened, which makes the characters at times appear somewhat ...less intelligent and rather impulsive. As soon as the second episode, the plot moves in an entirely different direction - which is something I don't necessarily take an issue with, because that way, the people who read the book also get to experience a new twist on the story. And (I'm not going to spoil), the original resolution might not be as interesting on screen as the direction they went into). So my issue really isn't that it's different from the novel - I actually think that was the correct choice. My bigger issue is that...at times the changes that were made cannot really live up to the original and sometimes feel a little forced and convoluted or linger on aspects that don't really contribute to the overall plot (e.g. the mine-scene and involving a NATO military base and what not...this just seemed really random.) The whodunnit mystery of the novel is resolved very efficiently and very elegantly - it explains everything with very little effort. This is not so much true for the resolution of the show which...seems a lot more elaborate and forced and with fewer breadcrumbs leading us there. It also loses a lot of its message: (getting dangerously close to spoilers) - the original solution made a point about how the public and the media engage with crime and how we talk about victims (which also plays a role in some of the minor plots concerning singular characters, most of which were also shortened). The tv-show does incorporate many of the elements like the behaviour of the journalists sieging the house of Matthias and his wife etc. - but there isn't a similarly interesting resolution to any of this as there was in the novel. Something I appreciated that was left out was the 'Hannah has Aspergers' plotline of the novel which I didn't really think added much to the story or her character, especially since she has this "eerie child" role. What the show does really well is portray moments of horror and despair and build tension. Sometimes I feel like it struggles a little bit in portraying levity - especially the final scenes are rather cliche-ridden. A personal modest suggestion from me as a German-speaker: I listened in on the English voice-over and even if you don't speak German, I would personally recommend the original voices and subtitles. I think it would significantly improve the experience watching this show.

A bit slow at first and the dubbed-in english was annoying, but it got better as it went along. Strange and interesting story.
