What to Know

Critics Consensus

Original Sin cares less about injecting fresh blood than reviving a tried-and-true formula, making for a prequel that's just solid enough to scratch the Dexter itch with a scalpel.

Lauren Sarner New York Post “Dexter: Original Sin” isn’t unwatchable. It’s filled with entertaining performances, but the story feels like it’s beating a dead horse, rather than offering up an exciting prequel that has a compelling reason to exist. Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) Turns out there’s still blood -- just a few drops -- to be squeezed from everyone’s favourite vigilante serial killer. Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Alison Herman Variety Original Sin doesn’t draw any new life from a piece of IP that’s now old enough to vote. It does, however, represent the profit-chasing retrospection that’s devouring culture from the inside out like a termite infestation. Dec 16, 2024 Full Review Alex Maidy JoBlo's Movie Network The fact that this series has flashbacks is even more ridiculous than the hair Patrick Gibson sports in the first episode. Rated: 6/10 Jan 2, 2025 Full Review Marty Brown Common Sense Media Dexter's tale is quickly becoming the most overtold origin story after Batman. Rated: 2/5 Dec 30, 2024 Full Review Joel Keller Decider While we’re not convinced that Dexter: Original Sin will be as compelling as the early years of the original series, we’re hoping that the new cast develops their own chemistry instead of trying to imitate the dynamic of the original show’s cast. Erin W If you are an original Dexter fan, I think you will love this show. They stayed true to the tone of the show and absolutely nailed the casting and personality of the key characters. Having Michael C Hall narrating just makes the show complete perfection. LOVE IT! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Philipp N Loved it so far. Definetely has the vibe of the original. The actors are all great. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Peter S Excellent return to form for this franchise. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Laura J Have been binge-watching the original Dexter, which is still a stellar series, and then watched the first episode of Original Sin. Not at all impressed. The acting by Gibson as young Dexter is over-wrought; he's trying too hard to look menacing when his physical presence and appearance don't seem at all menacing. His character approach makes Dexter seem as though he's on the autism spectrum rather than being a murderous psychopath. Brown's potty-mouth Deb looks clearly uncomfortable with her dialogue and artificial in her acting. Slater doesn't seem genuinely concerned in his role, either. The attempts at comedic respite make Original Sin more like a daytime soap than a nighttime drama. The only saving grace is Michael Hall's magnetic voice-overs, which still have that cadence, creepy tonal quality and dramatic impact. Might try watching again after the series is free and streaming online, but am not going to pay for it if the entire series is this mediocre. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Brian G "Dexter: Original Sin" is a gripping and intense prequel to the original series, with Patrick Gibson delivering a phenomenal performance as young Dexter Morgan. Gibson's portrayal brings a fresh energy to the character, capturing the essence of Dexter's dark passenger while infusing it with his own unique charm ¹. The show's writing is top-notch, with each episode expertly crafted to create a sense of tension and suspense. The supporting cast, including Christian Slater and Molly Brown, deliver solid performances that add depth and complexity to the narrative ². One of the standout aspects of "Dexter: Original Sin" is its ability to balance humor and darkness. Gibson's Dexter is both captivating and terrifying, making it easy to become invested in his journey ². Overall, "Dexter: Original Sin" is a must-watch for fans of the original series. With its gripping storyline, outstanding performances, and masterful balance of tone, it's a worthy addition to the Dexter franchise ³. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Christine P I love it so far! Batista is so spot on! I love that Michael C Hall is narrating…I missed that seductive, yet creepy voice…and the actor that plays younger Dexter is recreating his character so well! I hope there will be more seasons to come! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
