What to Know

Critics Consensus

Original Sin cares less about injecting fresh blood than reviving a tried-and-true formula, making for a prequel that's just solid enough to scratch the Dexter itch with a scalpel.

Louis Peitzman New York Magazine/Vulture The resolutions themselves, however, are mostly clunky, reflecting the overall clumsiness of the season. Rated: 2/5 Jan 25, 2025 Full Review Lauren Sarner New York Post “Dexter: Original Sin” isn’t unwatchable. It’s filled with entertaining performances, but the story feels like it’s beating a dead horse, rather than offering up an exciting prequel that has a compelling reason to exist. Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) Turns out there’s still blood -- just a few drops -- to be squeezed from everyone’s favourite vigilante serial killer. Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Alberto Carlos Espinof ...a solid and absorbing crime series whose biggest crime is that it's a prequel.[Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/5 Jan 30, 2025 Full Review Alex Maidy JoBlo's Movie Network The fact that this series has flashbacks is even more ridiculous than the hair Patrick Gibson sports in the first episode. Rated: 6/10 Jan 2, 2025 Full Review Marty Brown Common Sense Media Dexter's tale is quickly becoming the most overtold origin story after Batman. Rated: 2/5 Dec 30, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Bob M. THIS is why Showtime is in the eighth place of streaming platforms when there’s only four major platforms… This show was fantastic and they did not give it room to grow. They do this with all of their good shows. Plus their promotion for these things is horrible. I didn’t even know this existed until after it was canceled! First of all, it was so unbelievably well cast… All of the actors that played their younger counterparts were so great. In many cases I was confused because I couldn’t understand how they made the original actors look so young… But instead it was all NEW actors that looked, acted, sounded, etc. like the cast from the original series. The addition of Christian Slater as a much younger Harry and Patrick Dempsey as the captain were really well done too. But the show was really well done, totally kept you into it, it seemed realistic, it gave origin stories, and I’m just shocked that they didn’t let it grow. If you were a person that stays away from a show that was canceled after one season, like me, don’t. Before I knew it was canceled, I thought it was just a miniseries or something. So going all the way through, it does give you a sense of closure in the season finale which also became the series finale. Showtime, get it together. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/11/25 Full Review Spicy B Unlike with New Blood, 'twas somewhat genuinely sad to see this cancelled. Patrick Gibson as young adult Dexter was an amazeballs find/feat. Actually a lot of the casting/acting was nostalgic. Despite whatever suss delulu sitch they had going on with that long wig. Ruh roh, Raggy! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/11/25 Full Review Chloe M NOOOOOOOOOO! I'm so upset this was canceled, it is soooo good. I don't understand why we can't have both (original sin and resurrection)? 😭😭😭 here's to hoping they will change their mind. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/07/25 Full Review Tommy S WOW! Can’t believe how good this show is. I’ve watched Dexter 3-4 times, and this Original Sin has the capacity to live up to the hype. Characters are spot on. Killed it!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/06/25 Full Review Araceli g “I love it. It’s everything I hoped the prequel would be!”I wanted more .. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/06/25 Full Review Marzie K. Such a shame that there’s not gonna be a second season.🥲🥲 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/01/25 Full Review Read all reviews
