Before the spread of social media and easy access to online porn, Joe Francis's multi-million dollar "Girls Gone Wild" franchise, a series of tapes sold on late-night television that featured young spring breakers baring their breasts for T-shirts and hats, had a shocking grip on popular culture. Featuring Francis' first sprawling interview in almost a decade, as well as exclusive access to his former employees and survivors, this docuseries offers an astonishing and wide-ranging account of a man whose impact on American culture cannot be overstated, whose alleged sins are numerous and who now lives in exile on a sprawling estate in Mexico amidst the rubble of his once mighty empire.

Joel Keller Decider You may have watched a GGW video or two, or you may have seen the ads and thought, “who cares?”, but either way, you’ll be fascinated with Girls Gone Wild: The Untold Story as it details the rise and fall of Joe Francis and his skeevy video series. David F I remember the ads for these tapes from long ago and this documentary about the business of making and marketing them is a fascinating and wild ride through direct to consumer marketing of video tapes and dvds in the pre-streaming era. The documentary comes complete with a flamboyant and creepy businessman leading the company and the many people from different parts of the business - from cameramen to executives - give telling interviews that help you understand the dramatic rise and fall of this niche porn company the peaked just before the internet washed away almost all physical media save a few specialty companies. The filmmakers got a surprising amount of access to be able to tell the story of the business and the courtroom battles that helped to sink it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review CheeseBoy C Being too young to have lived through this, it was all very fascinating to watch. Episodes 1 and 2 were great, well told and very interesting! However it should have ended there. The series quickly turns up the drama and makes a sob story. It seems pretty clear that the reporter has a biased opinion and they force it upon us. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/25 Full Review Rocio A The sound is crap. Very amateur. It's louder at times than the commentary. The video production is bad too. The whole thing looks and feels as tawdry as the subject. Something I could/should have skipped. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Cara R This could have been fine if I didn't have to have it on mute 90% of the time and watch with subtitles. The sound production is god awful. Why is the music playing SO LOUD that I can't hear the commentary? Better off reading about it online since the sound makes it virtually unwatchable.
