What to Know

Critics Consensus

Good American Family's ambitious use of perspective has some rewards, but it also makes for a lopsided and questionable dramatization of this sordid true story.

James Jackson Times (UK) A whiff of luridness never quite goes away, even as this drama depicts, with some skill, all these complicated psychologies — the unravelling façade of a good American family, and one giant can of worms beyond. Rated: 3/5 Apr 15, 2025 Full Review Anita Singh Daily Telegraph (UK) In a world where every half-decent tale gets the true-crime TV treatment, this one was obviously going to make it to the screen. But this fictional dramatisation is inept. Rated: 2/5 Apr 10, 2025 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday It becomes a challenge to endure a show that jerks its audience around this much, and cannot decide whether it wants to be tabloid-level trashy television with horror leanings, a serious depiction of human failings... Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 24, 2025 Full Review Ed Power Irish Times ...it is deathly dull. May 7, 2025 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate Autism and Adoption are two 'trigger' words in today's culture - and Hulu's limited series delivers a double-whammy on both. Problem is: as scripted, Kristine is diabolically manipulative while Michael is a dumb, dependent loser. Rated: 7/10 May 1, 2025 Full Review Brian Farvour The Playlist Showrunners Katie Robbins and Sarah Sutherland know precisely how to develop a show’s momentum, coming out of the gate swinging but leaving plenty of room for the show to mature and grow naturally... Joanna W The way I see it, the show is trying to show you how the narrative of abusers is movie like, and very unrealistic, and if you don't know anything about it, you may actually believe it just like countless of not very educated people did. People believed the abusers in their sensational horror movie story, in reality. This show shows how absurd it is, even when they show the story from the mother's point of view initially, before showing reality, it's really ludicrous in many parts already. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Ally B This was fantastic. A detailed and fascinating telling of a difficult and upsetting story. Told from both points of view and cleverly adapted for the TV series. Imogen Faith-Reid's portrayal of Natalia Grace is excellent and Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass give convincing performances as the adoptive parents - whether biased or cruel. Well worth a watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/03/25 Full Review Audience Member I love this show and how the made it into their own version I love the actors they did awesome The ending was great I’d love to see a season 2 If season 2 is possible I’d like to see with more episodes involving with Natalia and the man’s family and how she deals with past in more details and how the man’s relationship becomes her family. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/30/25 Full Review Bill S A show more interested in shock value than telling a story. Regardless of which side you believe more in real life each side of the story is exaggerated beyond any believability. The Dad is portrayed as bumbling idiot, the mom is a cruel monster, and Natalia is either a pure sociopath or a complete innocent victim. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/26/25 Full Review Tom B I Watched this show not seeking a meaningful take on a serious subject, but instead through the same lens as Burn After Reading. It has a macabre humour that any good black comedy requires to be memorable. The two leads are perfect as is the actress who portrayed Natalia. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/23/25 Full Review Jesse H You really have to watch the full season to be able to properly rate this show. After watching the docu-series, I was alarmed by the first few episodes, thinking that they were just going to show the Barnett's perspective. However, the dramatic turn the show took when it flopped to Natalia's perspective was actually very moving. Ellen Pompeo played both sides of this character so effectively, it felt more impactful seeing the dark and manipulative side to Kristine's character after seeing her in the light that she wanted to be seen in at the beginning of the series. The episode where Natalia was left by herself in the apartment was beautifully made and heart wrenching. I wish they had gotten to her perspective sooner because I fear that they lost a lot of viewers by dragging out the beginning the way they did, making people think they were showing a one sided version of the story, especially after everything Natalia has gone through. I see what the filmmakers were trying to do though and I do think it was more effective than I was expecting, once I got past the first 4 episodes. Hang in there and watch it all!
