What to Know

Critics Consensus

Overflowing with dynastic intrigue and the rough-hewn grit that distinguished creator Steven Knight's previous historical dramas, House of Guinness goes down smooth like a silky pint.

James Jackson The Times (UK) House of Guinness is never dull. In fact, as family sagas go, it is, yes, rip-roaring. Rated: 4/5 Sep 29, 2025 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday House of Guinness is always entertaining, but there's a hollowness to it that's hard to shake. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 29, 2025 Full Review David Bianculli NPR House of Guinness is full of intense confrontations and unexpected complications -- and anyone who enjoyed Peaky Blinders, or Succession, or The Gilded Age, should find House of Guinness very satisfying to watch. Sep 26, 2025 Full Review George M. Thomas Akron Beacon Journal James Norton as Sean Rafferty, the Guinness brewery foreman and family enforcer proves enjoyable, far more complicated than anyone could have hoped. Ditto for Michael McElhatton as the de facto keeper of the family secrets and family butler John Potter. Rated: B Oct 13, 2025 Full Review Robert W. Butler Butler's Cinema Scene It’s not exactly a groundbreaking notion in the world of television, but “House of Guinness” tosses in a few nifty variations on a familiar theme. Plus it may be the most perfectly produced/photographed/edited miniseries I’ve ever seen. Oct 12, 2025 Full Review James Delingpole The Spectator When the dialogue is merely crudely expositional this isn’t too painful. Where the sensitive viewer’s toes might start to curl, though, is when it aspires to being witty or memorable or daring. Oct 9, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Lucy L Cliched, predictable and completely unconvincing. Not one singl character feels real. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review CJ K Boring trope story. Terrible accents. None of the characters are interesting or developed. A better show would have been about the development of the Guinness company, not one about four annoying children. This is Succession Light, really light. I hate this show. The music is forced and is too loud. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review A N. They take some liberties with history, but it’s still enjoyable, and the cinematography and music are absolutely exceptional. It’s worth the time. 😊 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review Amanda C. Interesting story with great actors. Not crazy about the cliffhanger ending. This used to work when we didn’t have to wait a year or two for the next season to drop . (Dallas, anyone?) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review james M Just absolutely hollow. They did the usual thing of put together a bunch of compelling components and then just call it a day. That's not how a good show gets made. Nothing feels cohesive here. Nothing feels immersive. None of the characters come off in any way believable. Just making a big period set and adding what you think is exciting modern music doesn't mean you've got a show. They thought they could just check off a few production boxes and have something solid. How does stuff like this get made? Does no one on the project think to themselves...this has so much potential but we're making it terrible? Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review Elena G I enjoyed the show, the actors and the scenes but the ending absolutely killed me. Why we start seeing more and more shows that end the first season with a suspense… suspense of a gun being fired and not knowing what happened after? You don’t end the book like that, you should have some kind of closure. Won’t be surprised if in the 2 season the shot will be absolutely meaningless and either a random person will be wounded or the guy missed.
