Critics Consensus

Overflowing with dynastic intrigue and the rough-hewn grit that distinguished creator Steven Knight's previous historical dramas, House of Guinness goes down smooth like a silky pint.

James Jackson The Times (UK) House of Guinness is never dull. In fact, as family sagas go, it is, yes, rip-roaring. Rated: 4/5 Sep 29, 2025 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday House of Guinness is always entertaining, but there's a hollowness to it that's hard to shake. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 29, 2025 Full Review David Bianculli NPR House of Guinness is full of intense confrontations and unexpected complications -- and anyone who enjoyed Peaky Blinders, or Succession, or The Gilded Age, should find House of Guinness very satisfying to watch. Sep 26, 2025 Full Review Stephen Porzio joe.ie Watching House of Guinness is like getting a crash course about Ireland’s past from a history buff in a pub who has already sunk a few pints of the black stuff. Oct 29, 2025 Full Review Kristian M. Lin Fort Worth Weekly At the very least, the next time someone puts a glass of that famous dry stout in front of you, this show will make you look at it in a different light. Maksym Y Firstly, about the cons: I was expecting a great story about a big company, but after watching, I was disappointed. Guinness changed the history of Ireland, yet I didn’t feel that impact in the series — it feels more like a story about a small local business. There’s also too much focus on romantic relationships between characters, making it feel more like a melodrama than a historical series. I also didn’t like the music; it doesn’t match the atmosphere of old Ireland for me. If it’s a series about the Guinness brand, it would be better to show the company’s origins — the story begins with the death of the founder’s grandson, but there’s no information about the original creator or how the company started. Now, about the pros: The show still captures a nice atmosphere of old Ireland and the UK. The old buildings, period outfits, and overall visuals are well done. It’s not on the same level as Peaky Blinders, but there aren’t many good series about this region that portray such an atmosphere. In conclusion: If you want to watch a series with a good old Irish atmosphere, this is a decent choice. But don’t expect a very engaging or deep plot. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/12/25 Full Review KIRSTY K The Guinness Family is a gorgeous, decadent pour of drama and charm—rich and entertaining from start to finish. With sumptuous costumes, sharp storytelling, and a cast that shines in every scene, it’s a period feast worth savouring. Who wouldn’t want to hang out with the Guinnesses! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/11/25 Full Review Sky W Steven Knight’s latest period drama takes an unexpected turn, centering its intrigue around a legendary brewing family. The production design is meticulous and the performances grounded, giving the series an earthy authenticity that pairs well with its industrial-age ambition. While some of the social and moral themes may divide viewers, Knight’s craftsmanship and sense of atmosphere keep the narrative fermenting with tension. For those drawn to layered historical storytelling, this is a worthy pour. Here’s hoping a second season is already on tap. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/10/25 Full Review Lynn R I liked it. Wasn’t sure at first. But I found it entertaining. Good acting. It keeps your interest. I have been to Ireland a few times and I have been to the Guinness Factory. Although the series is fiction , I still found it interesting. Sort of a Dynasty melodrama of the mid 1800’s. I hope there will be a Season 2. I think the writers have a lot to play with bc it must have been an interesting family. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/09/25 Full Review James M Style over substance. Rule number one of story telling is to have a character you care about. There is a point where you stop wondering what will happen next or to who, or whom. The music and the captions are also totally incongruous. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/07/25 Full Review Olga N I do not understand why this TV show has such a high rating.
