Mike Baxter is a happily married father of three daughters who finds himself the odd man out as he tries to maintain his manliness in a home surrounded by women. Mike tries to escape all the female drama at home in the warm, manly embrace of his job at the Outdoor Man store, a sporting goods emporium where he is marketing director. He also revels in his Outdoor Man vlog, which he uses as a pulpit for his opinions -- which often have nothing to do with the store's merchandise. When he's supposed to be selling mountain bikes or kayaks, he somehow ends up spouting off about the environment, health care, international politics or any other topic occupying his mind.

Margaret Lyons New York Magazine/Vulture Last Man Standing seems to think that its jokes and premise and crappy worldview are, like its hero, endangered somehow. What it doesn't seem to realize is that there's a reason shows like this have gone extinct. Sitcoms aren't my absolute favorite genre of show but I do enjoy this one. The humor is appealing and the show takes on some controversial issues without sacrificing laughs. Family values are done well, and it can teach children that even if you disagree with family (especially on politics) you can still respect and love one another. Good: Humor is appealing to many ages, topics are diverse and can occasionally be controversial but aren't ultra serious so they're still funny, family values, most of the plot, likeable characters such as Tim Allen's and Kaitlyn Denver's, show has enough seasons to watch long term Bad: Some acting in the early seasons is meh, some plot lines such as Mandy & Kyle are a bit weird, show's world can feel a bit small Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/25 Full Review Jonathan H I loved every season of this family-friendly show. The repartee is good, the back & forth political debates are funny and the family dynamics are interesting. There are definitely some character arcs throughout the seasons that are worth investing in. Yes, some parts of the show get to be predictable and there may be too many quick one-liners and puns, but overall it is one of my favorite shows made in the past decade. Every character is funny and interesting in their own way. Tim Allen & crew did a great job with this show. They were comfortable enough to make fun of themselves and not take things too seriously, and that resulted in a lot of relatable, humorous content.
