Michael Idato Sydney Morning Herald The genre itself isn’t fresh, even if the execution feels like it is. What is solid here, however, is the stunning cinematography (Sam Heasman and Aaron Reid) and richly textured direction from Rapman, aka Andrew Onwubolu. Rated: 4/5 Jul 11, 2024 Full Review Aramide Tinubu Variety Supacell has the familiar and sometimes predictable themes found in these types of projects... Still, Rapman’s exploration of what it means for Black people specifically to gain powers makes the show unique. Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Vicky Jessop London Evening Standard Does it work? Yes. The whole thing hangs together, thanks to the engaging cast (almost all of them are fresh faces), and the well-executed action sequences. Rated: 4/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Frantz Jerome Black Nerd Problems A well-worn story with a fresh lens and heaps of authenticity. Aug 26, 2024 Full Review KT Mahe For Your Reference Podcast Rapman injects new blood into the Sci-fi genre with South London flavour. While the messaging didn't always overlap with impact, there is an endearing charm to Supacell that brings the realness. Rated: 4/5 Aug 20, 2024 Full Review Oti For Your Reference Podcast Supacell brings a fresh perspective to familiar superhero powers and motivations, with a setting that adds depth only possible through a Black lens. Alexa B 100%!? Only if you don't understand anything about cinema or are biased. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/31/25 Full Review Tricia K It's impossible for this to have a 100% rating. It's bad, really bad. I watched because of the rating, I was scammed. Don't waste your time. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Raymon H The best all black Sci-Fi / Super Hero show since Black Lightning, and hard to remember others. The cast is fantastic. I'm glad the British did it first, and NetFlix was a GO. America just doesn't know how to let cultures represent themselves without catching feelings. But anyway, I hope they make an EastCell with Asian culture, an OB-Cell for Australian outback, and an Antarctic-Cell where they all meet. Or just make 8 Seasons of this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Gareth v This is an emotionally grounded superhero story with a strong social commentary and character depth . While not flawless, its ambition and freshness make it thoroughly binge‑worthy. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/29/25 Full Review Michael B Terrible writing, great acting. Worth a watch if it's that or rewatch that same old show again. This show is absolutely carried by the actors. Each of the main cast (with the exception of the "main" villains) and supporting characters did a great job turning terrible writing into something entertaining. As soon as you learn why some people have powers, the secret villain becomes obvious so the big reveal is made worse for cliche dialogue. "Now we do it my way"... really? The worst part is how Dionne's character never gets to be a person. She's just a tool the whole time, which feels well used up by the end. She's just confused and upset and then the show ends. Also seems messed up how dumb everyone is; you make all the main protagonists people of color, but also make them dumb as rocks? What's that about? Overall I'd say this show is a great showcase to modern talented actors, but has some of the worst dialogue and worst ways of resolving plot lines I've ever seen. We don't even learn why the villains are villains. STAY TUNED FOR SEASON 2 is not a good answer to unresolved plot. That is cheap and played out as hell. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/29/25 Full Review Neelesh S The series had a great start. Very refreshing cast, setup and I was just new to British Black culture and it was very very fresh (assuming it was depicted true). Superpowers because of a mutation in black people is a very nice premise. But in the middle, it really got taxing due to overuse of characters miscommunicating/not communicating, acting like dicks for no reason, just missing each other way too many times - a few episodes felt like filler. Also the goal of saving someone and failing no matter what - how many times have we seen that now? If only they'd cut down the episode time to make it tighter, and not go for the obvious plot just to extend to another season, it would've been a five starrer Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/22/25 Full Review Read all reviews
