Michael Idato Sydney Morning Herald The genre itself isn’t fresh, even if the execution feels like it is. What is solid here, however, is the stunning cinematography (Sam Heasman and Aaron Reid) and richly textured direction from Rapman, aka Andrew Onwubolu. Rated: 4/5 Jul 11, 2024 Full Review Aramide Tinubu Variety Supacell has the familiar and sometimes predictable themes found in these types of projects... Still, Rapman’s exploration of what it means for Black people specifically to gain powers makes the show unique. Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Vicky Jessop London Evening Standard Does it work? Yes. The whole thing hangs together, thanks to the engaging cast (almost all of them are fresh faces), and the well-executed action sequences. Rated: 4/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Frantz Jerome Black Nerd Problems A well-worn story with a fresh lens and heaps of authenticity. Aug 26, 2024 Full Review KT Mahe For Your Reference Podcast Rapman injects new blood into the Sci-fi genre with South London flavour. While the messaging didn't always overlap with impact, there is an endearing charm to Supacell that brings the realness. Rated: 4/5 Aug 20, 2024 Full Review Oti For Your Reference Podcast Supacell brings a fresh perspective to familiar superhero powers and motivations, with a setting that adds depth only possible through a Black lens. Audience Member The movie is visually captivating but stumbles with weak storytelling and shallow character development. While the cinematography excels, delivering scenes with impressive quality and style, the acting and narrative fall short. The cast, despite their efforts, delivers performances that feel average, and the story does little to elevate them. The characters come across as frustratingly unrealistic, often showing confusion and fear that leads to poor choices. This undermines their credibility, especially as they repeatedly put loved ones in obvious danger with reckless actions. The film’s portrayal of the drug trade is also troubling, as it seems to glamorize or normalize the involvement of characters meant to be the "heroes," making morally questionable choices to accept or participate in the drug business. In the end, while visually impressive, the movie’s weak characters, misguided heroics, and a narrative that leans heavily into problematic themes make it a difficult film to enjoy. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review XIMENA F The special effects were a disgrace, but the acting and the script were phenomenal! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/25/24 Full Review Andrew B Exceedingly mediocre. Quite literally all of the major plot points come from the characters making really stupid decisions, despite being portrayed as generally intelligent people. And within six 50-minute episodes, almost nothing of real story value happens. 90% of screen time is just character development. Sad, because the acting, VFX, and art style were all pretty top notch. Don't waste your time with this one honestly. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review Audience Member Awful acting at best! I don't know how much Rotten Tomatoes is getting paid to give this rubbish 100%. The plot is as predictable as it is bad. The lack luster characters and performances by the actors is toe curlingly bad. The special effects are average at best. I genuinely don't know how anyone could recommend this, unless as I say Tomatoes have received a nice little bribe! Do not waste a minute of your time on this rubbish. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review Hank T The plot premise is ok, but not exactly new: "random people gain super powers, now they mist discover their use and the responsibility that comes with it". Cast is so-so, direction is good. Not bad, but nothing worthy of competing with the 500 other such serieses Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/04/24 Full Review Simon T There are many things to like about the show. First and foremost, seeing new actors at the start of their careers, all give very fine performances. What I like most about the series is that is does a very interesting thing with a mix of genres. At one level it's a superhero series but on another level its about culture in London and the people that live there. Some of the characters are involved in gangs, some willingly some against their better natures. By placing particularly the gang culture against against nascent superpowers asks the characters and the audience to consider how different choices are available given different circumstances and abilities. To that extent the series is wonderfully subversive. Some of the characters seem largely unchanged by gaining new abilities while for others they take advantage of their new abilities and circumstances to transform towards better versions of themselves. This is a wonderful idea and is very well explored. As a student of English I really enjoyed the way that the script is written in such an uncompromising way in terms of vernacular and dialect. It was such a pleasure to realise that I needed to turn subtitles on to get what many of the characters were saying. The production team and writers should be very proud of this. I'm sure there is a very compelling temptation to change the dialogue into a lingua franca. As shows as syndicated it is very tempting to write shows in a vernacular that can be understood easily by as wide an audience as possible. It really is such a shame that more shows don't do what Supacell does - it takes a lot of bravery and I applaud the decision to write in dialect very much. While many English speakers may have initial issues with the dialect - turning on subtitles (at least initially) will get you over the hurdle and in time you'll appreciate the dialogue even more because of the dialect it uses. I'd also note that the great Eddie Marsan has a limited amount of screen time in series 1 and its a great compliement to the younger members of the cast that as much as I love watching Mr Marsan - I actually wouldn't have expected not to miss him being on screen more. That's also a reflection on the story - all good 'superhero' stuff is based on character and plot - rather than on the super ability stuff. In sum bravo and very much look forward to (hopefully) seasons to come Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
