What to Know

Critics Consensus

Stylish and genuinely scary, Teacup's human drama has some spillage but the atmospheric frights of this horror series leave a pleasing aftertaste.

Graeme Blundell The Australian Despite my long-held misgivings about the horror genre, I was sucked in to this series across the first two episodes. Oct 16, 2024 Full Review Bill Goodykoontz Arizona Republic 'Teacup' isn't horrible. It's just too long. Oct 14, 2024 Full Review Daniel Fienberg The Hollywood Reporter It’s a puzzle not because the characters are trying to figure things out, but because the creators are being evasive and hoping viewers will nod and play along. Oct 11, 2024 Full Review Jenny Nixon Common Sense Media This is a dull, cliché-filled story told at a dragged-out pace that doesn't do it any favors. Nov 4, 2024 Full Review Amie Simon I Love Splatter Ep 1 has one HELL of an opening sequence; Ep 2 keeps that trajectory going STRONG; and the bloody special F/X in each episode are fantastic. I am fully into this whole story; from beginning to end, and also very impressed with how it’s unfolding. Oct 18, 2024 Full Review Archika Khurana The Times of India While Teacup sets up an intriguing premise and the performances, particularly by Strahovski and Dolden, are strong, the pacing might be a challenge for some viewers. Guyver R Better than I expected, oh yes it gave me that nostalgia from retro movies. Highly recommend I watch this show in one swoop about 4 hours. Waiting for season 2 anxiously. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/28/25 Full Review Johnathan R I feel that NBC gave up on this show too soon. This isn’t 2015 anymore. There is a plethora of streaming services now. They’re not going to pull in the ratings they like with all the stiff competition there is. The only reason I tuned in was I was looking for something to fill the void of from, and this show didn’t disappoint. If NBC were smart; they’d sell the rights to Netflix, or HBO. They both have a reputation of producing rated MA television shows and being successful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/21/25 Full Review Shona M D I watched this because Yvonne was in it...sadly, although the acting is good, the rest falls short. So dark it is hard to see the action...Very slow pace and very little storyline...I don't really feel anything for any of them so I'm just not invested in it. Shame really cos it had a lot of potential. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/02/25 Full Review The S It’s criminal that people keep referring to this a “horror.” It’s not. It’s not even really suspenseful because it’s so absolutely unbelievable that it’s impossible to get invested in any way to the plot. I had creative writing in college and the first thing I was taught was to tether your narrative. Tether your narrative. That means that no matter what you’re writing, whether it’s fantasy or sci-fi or horror or Lifetime movies, write it from a place that is believable so it is anchored in some human way where your reader (or viewer) can genuinely connect to in a way that affects them, affects them on a visceral level and allows them to continue opening up as the plot evolves. This isn’t just a problem with “Teacup.” American streaming networks are so desperate for “content” (which is the very appropriate name for what we used to call series and movies) that they’ve dropped all form of standards because they literally just need to fill space and create something…anything they can sell to a public that will watch absolutely anything without caring too much about how bad it is. So that ushered in an era of “writers” who have thrown out standards as much as their audiences have. So..a story like this will have no real reason or explanation for what’s going on that’s feasible. It just has to have pretty actors and be filmed in HD and a magic goat man waves his right arm and nobody can leave the farm and waves his left hand and there’s a magic stone that can save everyone (from what, you’re not exactly sure) and magic goat man can blink his eye and posses a child. You get the idea. None of it makes sense so there’s no way to connect or care. You can watch all 8 episodes and it’s just a horribly trite love story about betrayal wrapped in a really, really bad sci-fi exterior that wasn’t tethered to anything. So it risked nothing and as a result, offers nothing of substance to its viewers. Avoid it and you’re welcome. Updated to say I just saw where this was cancelled and there will be no season 2. Note to writers: you can’t punctuate a season of awful writing with a cliffhanger and think it’s going to make people want more. As you’ve seen, when it’s bad, one season is enough no matter how poorly you tie it all up in the finale. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Ronnell S I enjoy the story up until the reveal of what’s actually going Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/12/25 Full Review Vandai ! One of the worst series I've watched in recent years! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/25 Full Review Read all reviews
