Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) Creators Ben Davies and Timothy Lee have made a litmus test: how little contemplation does your storytelling need?... Territory does exactly what it sets out to do, but there are limits to its ambitions. Rated: 3/5 Oct 30, 2024 Full Review Luke Buckmaster Guardian Do we call this elevated action? Prestige drama, with its head blown off? Either way it’s a sensationally heady mix. Rated: B- Oct 23, 2024 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate This Australian Western series adds a smidge of 'Succession' to a dollop of 'Yellowstone." Fortunately, the writers & director inject intriguing Down Under jargon and folklore along with authentic Aboriginal actors into the sudsy, derivative melodrama. Belinda J I quite liked this show. I think the writer/s tried a little too hard to make it an Australian version of Yellowstone, with constant violence and threats (but that also made it quite entertaining, as after all, it is fictional). Definitely worth a watch, but I am very disappointed that Netflix is not renewing for a second season. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/25 Full Review Jeff T It's not Yellowstone.... But I liked it!! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/25 Full Review Brian F Lots of rotten people. Greed. Selfishness. Misogamy. Still, it has an interesting exotic Australian Western element to it. But, when they killed off the young, idealistic grand-daughter, I stopped watching. Too much old-fashioned male toxic stereotypes on the show without her. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/04/25 Full Review Bob's Y Reminds me of why I stopped watching Yellowstone. There's not any characters that are likeable, they're all a bunch of cads. I loved Robert Taylor in Longmire; he was a flawed person but had a core of ethics. Nothing like that exists in any of the characters in Territory (nor Yellowstone, for that matter). Perhaps they showed up in later episodes, but should have gotten to it much earlier. I didn't finish the first episode. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/02/25 Full Review Thomas L The show is a...I want to use the word convoluted, but that may make the show sound complex or hard to follow, and it's neither one of those. It's, as my mother would say, busy. Instead of zeroing in on one particular story to tell, it decides to give us three, four, five seasons worth of stories in one. So what's some of the plot points: 1. The First/Eldest son dies, leaving behind no heirs. The Father/Grandfather doesn't want to hand the business off to his Youngest son and his 'trash' wife (also, she's wife #2, wife #1 died years prior). So instead, Father/Grandfather gets super drunk at the funeral of his First born, and nominates his grandson who doesn't want to have anything to do with them. -Now this is what I would call season 1, because season 1 is only six episodes long. The whole entire show could have been about how the grandson rejects his new inheritance, as his Grandfather and Youngest Son (I.E Grandsons Father) attempt to bring him back. All the while police and family try to discover how and who might have killed the First born. 2. Mining company is trying to move in on the vast northeast ranch land held by the Lawson family, and mine for gold (but actually they just want to claim it for gold, giving them mining rights, while, in actuality, turning the land into a massive nuclear waste dumping ground). Also, the Lawsons are the protagonist of the show. -This is what we call season 2. Where we establish a outside threat that unites the family together. All the while, the daughter of Youngest Son with wife #2, commonly called 'trash', is having a 'liaison' with the mining companies son. With this we have not only established a villain, but also gave ourselves a Romeo and Juliet drama. 3. The Aboriginal tribes in the surrounding area want back their ancestorial lands from the Lawsons, all the while another Aboriginal, named Nolan, who has abandoned his roots, is willing to make a deal with the mining company in order to make massive amounts of wealth. -Season 3! After beating back the advances of the mining company, our nefarious villain looks for other means to claim the Lawson land. She, our mining CEO, makes a deal with small time farmer Nolan who wishes to uplift his local tribe and secure his ancestorial homeland from the Lawsons. Now we have even more villains. Some just wish to to bring back and rule over land that was long lost. While the other, the mining company, we establish why she hates the Lawsons so much and wishes to claim all that's theirs. 4. The daughter dies, tragically breaking the mother and fathers hearts, while also, breaking the mining CEOs sons as well. -This was the biggest "What the F*ck!" moment in the whole season. Because they spent, I want to say the first four episodes, establishing this girl who really wants to fill her grandfathers shoes. She meets CEO miners son, and they are really interested in each other, and at the same time she wants to purchase a bunch of cows in order to fix the herd inbred problem and make the Lawson cattle worth more. I just don't agree with killing her off in any season, mainly because you can create so much more drama by other means with her staying alive. Also, it creates a divide between CEO mommy and son, which of course would be exploited by Lawson Grandfather. 5. Cattle are being stolen in the night, and local government officials at interstate checkpoints wave them through, with a wink and a bribe. Oh, and did I mentioned that the person stealing them was also wife #2's ex. -And this is season four. After the Lawson's grant the Aboriginals land tracts in their ancestorial lands, the mining company has to retreat, licking their wounds. All the while, CEO mommy has lost her son to the Granddaughter and the Grandfather. But the threats just don't end. A new threat comes in the guise of cattle baron, who also happens to be wife #2's ex. This is when we begin to give hinting's to maybe Granddaughter not being the Youngest Sons child. An we reveal that wife #2 has been seeing this man off and on for years. 6. The Grandsons friends, divided loyalty, and great reveal of wife #2 of being Eldest Son's killer. -Now the Grandsons loyalty and friendships will be tested across all five seasons, but season five will be his biggest test when he discovers his Father is actually his Grandfather. (As I think the show was giving us that hint in the last episode when he opened the safe.) Now you actual don't even have to do Granddaughter drama from last season if you decide to explore this idea, mainly because you don't want to make yourself into a soap opera where everyone is constantly questioning their child's legitimacy. But at the same time, the great reveal of the Eldest Son's Killer is reveal to be wife #2 (which like I said above, this is a plot point). Now the family is destroyed, no trust and every one is at each others throats. Will the family survive? An if you wish to continue the show, you bring back mining mommy who launches her largest attack against the divided Lawsons. There Netflix, I fixed your show and made into five season binge-fest, possibly six if you want to push it. An if you say, "Hey, some of that just seems like rip offs of (blank)." Duh, it's a Yellowstone clone, at least you could do was bring the story more up to snuff. But I just want to say that I didn't mention anything about smaller storylines, like the Grandsons friend apparently being a meth head (I didn't see him do meth, but people keep mentioning him doing drugs and meth). Or how Grandson and his best friend are in love with the same woman, or how they stole Lawson property and were hunted down by Grandfathers hired men. Or how wife #2 is related to cattle thieves called the Hodges, which is why Grandfather calls her 'trash.' Or that Youngest Son went to prison for shooting a gun in a pub, that nearly killed his daughter. Etcetera, Etcetera. Just so much busy work. So all in all, the show is a 5/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, I think, possibly lower. The acting is fine. I don't really like Michael Dorman, he just delivers and plays the same character in everything. Go watch Patriot, Joe Pickett, and then this. Guy always seems like his three ambiens in the wind, or he's the human incarnate of Eeyore. But the story just feels so rushed and busy, and just doesn't gel or work in any capacity. Your story needs to slow down and breathe. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review Denise D During the entire 6 episodes, events seemed disconnected and unbelievable. For the Lawsons who ran "the biggest station in the world", there was very little work going on, and no ranch hands. In my opinion, fine actors, poor script.
