Created by George Pelecanos and David Simon, who also collaborated on HBO's "The Wire" and "Treme," the semifictional drama series "The Deuce" tells of the germination of the sex-trade industry in the heart of New York's Times Square. It's the early 1970s, and the porn business begins a shift from organized crime-backed parlors to a legitimate, culturally accepted enterprise. A cast of barkeeps, prostitutes, pimps, police and nightlife seekers centers around twins Vincent and Frankie Martino (James Franco, in a dual role), who navigate the sex business after meeting well-connected mobster Rudy Pipilo. Their storyline, among others, merges with that of prostitute Candy, whose ambition and intelligence lead her to a more prominent role in the industry.

"The Deuce" provides a raw, emotional and an approximately all-encompassing view of a cultural development, namely the porn-industry, that is of global importance, to say the least. Gyllenhall as the broken but proud female lead and Franco as the dull but honest dual-lead provide the strongest corner pillars. From first second to last installment you will be gifted with pure serial craftsmenship. Sad to know that Simon and Pelecanos only reach but the smallest audience.

The last season was just boring. We are supposed to care about characters who we don't really care about. I liked Abby but in the end we had to watch her throw away her life for no particular reason. Maggie's character also got boring. The list goes on

The Deuce is smart to make such large time jumps between seasons, and the third and final is much more immediately electrifying than the previous two. It ends strongly and emotionally with the most thematic and unfiltered season overall. The finale wasn't perfect, but it left me with the distinct realization that everyone I've ever met is going to die. Season 3 hones the show's skills and focuses on what it does best: characterization. The best thing about The Deuce has always been how the events surrounding the characters have shaped their decisions and outlook on life.
